Juan Lopez Seleccion Number 2 or Juan Lopez Seleccion Number 1?

Which is more in your wheelhouse?  Why?

Taking price out of the equation.......working simply on flavour and consistent utility/enjoyment?

I'm a massive fan of No 1, but so i'm surprised it's taken a very early lead in the poll.    No 2 I find to be very generous in it's simple flavour delivery, and I can see why it gets a lot of love.

I'd say the No2 is a little bit like great little family run fast food place thats been going for decades that just does one thing incredibly well, whereas the No1, is a bit like a molecular gastronomy experience, it has the chance of maybe hitting higher highs, but also a much higher potential of turning some people off.

I tend to mirror your thoughts.

The JLS2 has had some super runs over the years and when they are on, they rival any Robusto in the market (to my taste) and that includes CORO. They can vary from medium bodied goodness to outright ruthless, particularly in the early years. I can't remember the last one that let me down. They are a great mate. The sort of mate that you would go to a rugby test together and let rip on a wild afternoon. :D

The JLS1 doesn't seem to miss a beat but it's a touch more cultured, nuanced. More night at the theatre. More date night.

I need both in my world :cigar:

For most times I prefer the smoking duration of a Robusto. Enjoy the Juan Lopez 2.

The Juan Lopez 1 and 2 are, along with the BBF, probably my favorite smokes. I selected JL1 as more full-bodied, and that could have to do with age. The JL1 boxes in my rotation are all from 2015, with some ‘18 and ‘21 in reserve. My JL2 boxes are, on the other hand, from ‘18 and ‘22. An unpredictable result of age, the crop perhaps, or maybe it’s simply the higher ratio of wrapper-to-fill, but the JL1’s strike me as fuller than these JL2’s. Not by much, but that’s my perception. I can enjoy a JL2 after breakfast, but I’ve found that JL1 has to be an afternoon smoke at the earliest. That said, I love them both almost equally, but I will usually pick up the JL2 rather than its taller, skinnier brother because - again, just my personal opinion - the JL2’s flavors make their appearances a little more smoothly. The JL1’s can have a bit of elbow here and there, while the JL2’s come across woven like a tapestry. If the JL1 is a scherzo, the JL2 is a nocturne.

I haven't had a JL2 yet that didn't smoke like a Rottweiler yanking on the cuff of my jeans.  I'll take JL1 every time.

When I first tried a JL2 it was ROTT and was 5th in my Robusto rankings. After a year laying down a JL2 PSP box from FOH, I can now say it’s one of my favorite Robustos and a part of my weekly rotation now. The difference time makes is no joke when it comes to CC’s. One of the more affordable robustos based on current pricing. Give it a try after some time down and it will change your mind about it.

No.1 fell in favor for me more recently as more complex but I feel like that is recent, as I would have chosen the 2 over it years ago. But the No.2 has remained unchanged as a wild blast of a citrusy strong robusto for cheap...ish. I like them both,

JL1 all day every day and twice on Sunday!  JL2 is a fine robusto but I put it 3rd behind Coro and BRC personally.  I'd even argue VR Famoso is ahead of it although technically not a robusto 😵😵😵

I like "fill in the blank" robustos more than corona gordas.  Either JL is a fine cigar.

  1. I have not samples many of each, maybe 5. The 1s were nothing special, I remember thinking after a little time down. The 2s were brutal young and I was afraid of them so I forgot about the last 3 I had. When I got up the nerve to sample another the chocolate and orange flavor was there and I got what all the fuss is about. So yet again a Cuban cigar shows its true self after it has about 4 or 5 years of box age.

Love both and prefer the No. 1 size but the No. 2 is almost always a step above.

Love them both! My first love of JL brand is JL4, having perfect mix from JL1/JL2 DNA.

I miss JL4, it's the reason why I found this forum.

I think @El Presidente hit it on the head with the "I need both in my life" sentiment. JL1 definitely has more pedigree and complexity (and what a perfect size). However, the JL2 is a cigar that I just "get" every single time--it always has that nice citrus twang and gives me 100% of what I am expecting 100% of the time. Both are great, but I do find myself reaching for the JL2 a lot more recently.
