Rhinoww Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 I have acquired a number of custom rolls lately. Several hundred actually. Most will get some age and be stored away. Curious to hear how others “keep like sticks” together for aging. I recently saw someone on Reddit use glassline paper. New to me but intriguing. I would like to bundle the sticks up, mark them appropriately, and forget about many for a few years. curious how folks here bundle up your customs? Bundle them up yes, but how?
Corylax18 Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 Gallon zip lock bags for me. You can write the what/when on them, then I just leave them open in my humidors. For longer term ageing, I put them in old cedar cabs, then vacuum seal. 2

It also seems like I am not optimizing space well and risk damaging sticks due to the varying size. If I had ziplocs that fit each vitola better it would look better. Perhaps I need to stop dipping in so frequently to grab sticks to smoke …
BrightonCorgi Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 Vacuum seal bags work, just don't get aggressive on vacuum. I use to use wax paper to separate singles in a desktop humidor. 2

Perhaps I need to stop dipping in so frequently to grab sticks to smoke … You can use smaller sizes for PC's, Corona Especial, etc. Robustos are usually too girthy to fit the full bundle in the smaller size bags. I have one Ziploc on top of the pile that has a mix of cigars in it. I grab from that for regular smoking. I've got a couple of my coolidors packed pretty dense with this method and I rarely get any damage or deformity. 1
Rhinoww Posted April 27, 2023 Author Posted April 27, 2023 FWIW, the ziploc bags are currently open in a weathertight container- I think somewhere in the 30qt range. Rh is a stable 65. I could stack two bundles of 25, but they don’t stack well in the ziplocs.
Popular Post LizardGizmo Posted April 27, 2023 Popular Post Posted April 27, 2023 I got custom 50cabs from Troy over at Troy's Woodworks https://troyswoodworks.com. Fits a variety of different sizes. I wrap the cigars with a ribbon and off they went. He even laser-engraved the side of them with my big dumb head 18

I have a couple wineadors with some cedar shelving, I just shove and stack and rearrange until they fit. Cigars are a lot tougher than most people give them credit for. 5

Fair amount of work but quite a payoff. I already have my custom made branding iron w logo. Hmmmm. Making my own boxes would certainly be another rabbit hole for me, but would combine hobbies … 3

Bagman Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 Save your boxes from your current stash?. If they match in size, you could just load them there. Safe way to go if you plan to ever vacuum seal. Cigar shop around here sells empty boxes. 4
ReturnFreeRisk Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 Use the air tight food container plastic boxes with bovedas in each to separate vitolas of custom rolls, nudies. Then those boxes stack well with all my others in the larger weather tight binsSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2
BrightonCorgi Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 How much are the custom made 50 cabs? That is just what I am looking for. I knew I should've never thrown out my empty boxes.

I use tbem all the time for customs or to age Quintero's.
Popular Post joeypots Posted April 27, 2023 Popular Post Posted April 27, 2023 This Rubbermaid food container works great for me. It has a very tight seal. I separate loose cigars with wax paper and add a Bovida. 7

Time to find some 1/4" spanish cedar. Only the engraving was done with laser. All cuts on saw, box joints done with router. Cutting Spanish Cedar with laser leaves a ton of char and impregnates wood with the burnt smell. As SC is a very soft hardwood. Easily picking up smells. Did a mock-up of box using laser to cut. Lesson learned.
Rhinoww Posted April 29, 2023 Author Posted April 29, 2023 A router and a jig would not be difficult. Could also to a joint on a table saw.

Rhinoww Posted May 10, 2023 Author Posted May 10, 2023 Looping back to this thread. I have opted to bundle my customs in one weathertight container by vitola, and basically have two main Vitolas from the same maker that filled that first container. Vitolas are bundled by 1 inch ribbon w date of purchase and any other pertinent info written by sharpie on the ribbon. The next container will have quite a few more and different customs, which I was also planning on maintaining by bundle w a ribbon and move out of the opened ziploc bags. Question for the group - will allowing the different sticks touch wrappers change flavor profiles at all. I have not had issues w the boxes sharing the same air, but here the sticks will be touching at points. while I’m not a separate my food on my plate kinda guy, the remaining sticks have a wide degree of flavor profiles I would like to maintain.
anacostiakat Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 WOW! Applaud everyone's industriousness. If they don't show up in zips I put them naked in maked gallon zips. When I get down to whatever point I will combine them in one bag of different sizes. Keeping source sticks together. I do have individual blank bands but at this point I don't use them.
Nevrknow Posted May 12, 2023 Posted May 12, 2023 I would be careful with combining. My SIL called me just today. I gave him multiple boxes in a coolidor and some nudies in a brilliance tupperdor. The nudies developed some mold. I'm not there so may have been heat/ humi. The other cigars are fine. No biggy, told him to wipe them off and concentrate on the nudies. Simple problem to adjust to as we discover what happened but combining all in one bag seems like asking for trouble to me. Besides, bags are cheap.

Besides, bags are cheap. If it were only a few….at this point several hundred. I have two weathertight containers w customs. One I have left the sticks in bags so far, the other I have wrapped and labeled in one inch white ribbon. The OCD side of me says the cigars neatly stacked in bundles are happier😂. They also have better air circulation. It is easier to navigate through that box to find what I am after. the weathertight container w each bundle in a ziploc bag looks a mess and I wonder if I’ll end up damaging a few sticks by moving bags that I can’t see so well. interesting point re mold. Might be worth another thread to better understand the how’s and why’s of mold starting in a collection. Always a risk, particularly I would assume before sticks are stabilized. I may go back to the box w the bundles and place a sheet of the cedar between bundles - this would in theory make the environment a bit more like the one inside of many dress boxes. always something to think about here.
