Late post here, but feeling nostalgic for the season already and anxious for April! My Twins got knocked out early but I had the privilege of getting to the first Wild Card game where they broke their record postseason losing streak, and the two ALDS home games. The atmosphere at that first WC game was like no other baseball game I’ve been to…truly a blast. We shouted ourselves hoarse! The ALDS games were sadly more subdued and we never really ran away with it. I got to take the kids to that final home game which was fun…stadium packed for evening baseball in the chilly October air.

Now I am just counting down the days until April. What else am I going to do with my time now that I can’t watch baseball!

So, as if I couldn't hate the Dodgers any more than I do, for 10 years I have to suffer my team having to face Shohei. And he gets 3/4 of a billion dollars as a glorified DH with an unknown pitching future ahead of him. Meanwhile my Giants should be front runners to sign a couple unknowns coming off Tommy John to wallow in our mediocrity. Here's to 2024, and me throwing up.

@JohnS did you read about the deferred money Ohtani is leaving on the table? He’s essentially going to be paid 2 million a year for 10 years and defer the other 680 million for the end of his contract. Thus allowing the Dodgers to continue spending with impunity. Twitter or X was going bananas over the weekend discussing this. Most claim if Cohen (Mets owner) had pulled something like this, the rest of baseball would’ve boycotted the season. I cannot believe the MLB allows for these games to be played with the CBA. It’s bad for competition! It’s bad for a game they’re looking to reinvent with 100 rule changes to attract new fans while pushing away their true fans. Kids these days don’t have the attention span to sit for 2 hours even and watch a full game. I’m not optimistic about the future of baseball to say the least.

The Dodgers are the Yankees of the west. They have no integrity. Scrubs. Bums. And they will still choke in the playoffs . I hope...

Javi, yeah...my son, George text me about it yesterday and said exactly the same thing. The main news story out of New York City in 2023 in terms of baseball was both teams managing the luxury tax threshold and then we get a situation like this. I agree, I simply have to say it...it's not good for baseball, no.

Greetings fellow Minnesotan! Hopefully the payroll slash doesn’t kill the Twins’ competitiveness in 2024!

With all the added payroll it also means added pressure. Could it be do or die for Roberts?

If there's one thing that I can glean from the winners of the World Series in the last decade, it's that teams that win aren't always replete with superstars, rather they are well-balanced and tend to ride a 'wave of form' into the postseason.

So, what do most MLB teams do? They mainly try to build a team that has a chance to get to the postseason and be competitive. If you try to buy a championship by getting free agents for a premium price it can place a lot of pressure on a team because of the elevated expectation from fans and team owners. The San Diego Padres and New York Mets, of recent times, can attest to this.

Personally, the idea of offering a pitcher a multi-year contract runs contrary to the reality of the things. By that I mean, how many pitchers in the last twenty years of the game have been at the top of their game for extended periods of time and not suffer injury/ies? It's one thing to dominate for three, four maybe five years...but for ten? The Dodgers can have Yamamoto. All the very best!

Yamamoto is coming to my Dodgers. Don’t think I’ll be able to afford a Dodger Dog anymore.

The Dodgers have gone crazy lol. Nobody wants to play in San Francisco evidently .

As for the Yamamoto signing it's crazy to me to bank on a pitcher from Japan for a decade. Ohtani is a different story. He will put asses in seats . But I agree with John that trying to buy championships seldom works out . LA is perennially in the playoff picture. I'm not sure what more you can ask as a fan base than that.

All I want as a Giants fan is to have a team I can get excited about. 3 years ago we won 107 games. So overall, since 2010 I've seen 3 championships ,a record winning season, and some really scrappy ( and crappy) years in between. Hey that's baseball.

Agree with everything you both said. More over, it's just not the same sense of achievement when it's basically bought. As a fan, of course, you'd take it. But I think any fan would agree the best victories are from a team that's a blend of upcoming talent, veterans, and a couple of pieces of clever trading and/or an outright "all in" spend on a big piece when the championship feeling is ripe.

I think the Astros are a prime example. Never an overloaded mega star line-up, but consistently a WS threat.

Giants have made some moves, most recently acquiring Matt Chapman. The Dodgers were the clear winners in the off-season this year but if we can get Blake Snell I'd be pretty damn stoked.

The jomboy crew wears suggesting he might do a short term deal, one year even, to leverage into a higher paying contract but idk what is really going to happen. I think boras is his agent so who knows?

Interesting to see what Shohei Ohtani is made of this year. I still say he's a one year wonder and the Dodgers made a huge mistake for paying him that kind of money.
