A petit robusto from a 2022 box.

Opening third: initial medium-light body with a predominantly creamy profile alongside some floral sweetness (honeysuckle, lavender). A toasted note gradually develops but tangled up in the sweet creaminess - toasted marshmallows. A clear leather aroma coming off it which is otherwise absent from the flavours I’m getting on the palate. Draw is easy without being too loose. Burn needs a few initial corrections.

Middle third: sweetness now becoming more dominant in a fresh honey note, bumping the body up a rung to an even medium. Creaminess steadily falling back without disappearing, making room for a tart fruit character (instant thought was stewed rhubarb, maybe even a bit of marmalade). As this third progresses the sweetness becomes even fuller, lifting the body again. A few more burn corrections needed soon after the ash dropped off, draw feels a little tighter.

Final third: a bit of a darker turn, as the sugary honey note turns towards more of a burnt caramel flavour. Medium full at this point and not letting up. Stewed fruits disappearing a bit under that caramel. Still needing burn corrections, plus a bit of tunnelling now in these closing stages. Finally at the back end, things settle back down to a medium light body, with a dry cedar note grabbing the spotlight, buffered by just a very delicate sweetness around the edges.

I’ve smoked a few of these before from older boxes and generally found it started strong, before dipping somewhere around the middle. Interesting to have the opposite tonight, where things started fairly mild before picking up steam in the second third.

Loses a few points from the constant touch-ups required, but otherwise a delicious and very satisfying short smoke.

90/100

R&J Petit Churchill

This is it! Don’t blame the others guessing HDM as I would have guessed that myself if I didn’t know what I was smoking, but it was indeed a Petit Churchill (box code RAP JUN 22)
