I have a box of the natural wrapper ones under the tree from the wife and daughter. All 1964's are great.

Love the Padron1964 Anniversario Principe. But I prefer the Natural over the Maduro. I agree with Rob, this is my favourite non-Cuban cigar - by a long margin!

I have one of these that I've been resting over 18 months.... Time to break it out

  • JohnS changed the title to Padrón 1964 - Maduro Principe (SMFRW#2)

Is it true that their Natural vs Maduro boxing is just a function of their color sort process at the end of aging?  Lighter ones go in Natural boxes and darker wrappers go in Maduro... but that is the only difference.

I don't think so, but I'd love to hear a more informed opinion. Reminds me to buy a few of each and light em up.

I’ve heard this natural over maduro preference a few times now in the ‘64 line. I’d love to hear the reason folks prefer them. What core flavors are you picking up on the natural?

No. Proper Maduro wrapper is a different treatment process.

The Padron 1964 line in general is excellent. I prefer the Hermoso and Imperial, or Exclusivo, but the Principe is a great quicker smoke. I love the natural wrapper a little more, but the Maduros are also excellent!

Some just don't like Maduro wrappers, period. I fall into that category.  If I have two sticks of RASS, one bordering on Maduro and the other Colorado/Colorado Claro I'm taking the lighter wrapped one and passing on the dark

Would Padron Maduro wrapper be made properly ?

I would be beyond amazed if it wasn't.

Yup, they cook it. Literally.

All that extra heat and moisture in one spot!

Cheap/Bad Maduros are some of the worst cigars I've ever smoked. Real maduros can be very good though. I haven't smoked a Padron in probably 5 years, but as Rob says, I would be absolutely stunned if Padron was just coloring sorting OR boiling their maduro leaf.

To be fair. That is not a Maduro wrapper on the RASS. It may "look" like a maduro wrapper, but it is not. It is simply a dark leaf/colour graded.

Maduro means "ripe". True Maduro is achieved through extending fermentation at a different temp and then aged longer again. It is a higher cost process.

Most cigars flogged as "Maduro" are not Maduro at all. They are treated one way or another (there are various ways) to be made to "look" Maduro.

Agreed. My point was to mainly differentiate the difference in flavors I get even from two distinct shades of wrappers on a RASS as an example. This could all be psychological, but a nice chestnut colored wrapper cigar tasted much better than a RASS with an extremely dark wrapper. We all have our wrapper shade preferences. I prefer brunettes. Never had a good blonde. I don't like strong peat in a single malt scotch. Prefer Les Pauls to Stratocasters. Excuse me while I relight my PLPC and take a sip of my Scotch 😁

I can't fathom Jorge Padron cutting corners and doing anything nonsensical such as dyeing or artificially manipulating Maduro leaf wrapper. This company was built from the ground up with blood, sweat and tears. Integrity being at the forefront.
