Chas.Alpha Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Just when you thought the world was my oyster... I started my new job on Monday, August 29th. Great crew and company! I flew in Sunday night, rented a car and had to drive to the main office in Winston/Salem for the paperwork. Drove back Monday afternoon and checked into what would even be considered a 1 star room in Havana. No bueno! Got settled in to the new company environment for a week and a half and flew back to Jax last Thursday morning. Friday, the movers show up 3 hours late, so we didn't get out until around 4:00 p.m. Getting the fat old cat into his carrier for the 7 hour drive wasn't too much trouble, but the younger skittish rodent wasn't having any of it. The 1st attempt, the thing freaked the F* out, scratched Debbie's arm and bit her! I cornered the little bastard with a beach towel and manhandled into the carrier and off we went. Got up to Raleigh about 11:30 p.m. that night, set a litter box and some food in the bathroom, carried the rodents into it and closed the door. Movers due around 9:00 a.m. Saturday. Went out to the car to drive to the (nicer) hotel I booked for the night and the car battery was dead. Uber. Saturday morning, got up with Debbie complaining that her arm hurt. We Uber back to the new house, call the auto club AAA, buy a new battery and when the movers arrive, they looked at the North Carolina 45 deg steep driveway and said "the truck ain't going to make it up THAT!!!" After some deliberation and a fair bit of cussing, they resigned themselves to the fact that they would have to carry everything up the driveway into the house. It took several hours longer than they had planned. (BTW, I tipped them each $350) They were Rock & Roll Animals! I took Debbie to the Apex Cigar Lounge for a smoke and grabbed dinner on the way back. At this point, she is seeking an ice pack for the arm... Sunday morning, she wakes me up about 5:30 a.m. and says that she had gone to the Urgent Care over night and they recommended that she seek an Emergency Room ASAP as her arm was showing signs of infection. Anyone old enough to remember the song "Cat Scratch Fever?" At the ER, they spent a little time before concluding that she needed I.V. antibiotics and would have to be admitted! By now, her arm is about the size of a plump California orange. Just when I thought things couldn't get any better, the thought occurred to me... "My new health insurance doesn't kick in until October 1st! I ain't got no insurance!!!" As of the time of this post, Debbie is still in the hospital with the room rate likely double that of the finest hotel on the planet. The cat has been hiding under the bed since Sunday night. To console myself, I placed an order for a 10 ct. box of Punch SdP this evening. Di's always so nice when she sends her rejection letters... 😔 13
cnov Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Hope your wife is on the mend and that you're not stung too hard! Never understood why healthcare is attached to a job over there. 1
Popular Post Rhinoww Posted September 16, 2022 Popular Post Posted September 16, 2022 Wow. At least things will get better. Glad she got care. Cellulitis is nothing to mess with. A few thoughts re the hospital costs 1) depending how long it’s been since your last job, you may still be able to elect COBRA coverage. You get the pleasure of the full premium, but you get coverage. If not,2) be sure to negotiate the bill. There is a big swing between billed hospital charges and what they take from insurance. If you can pay most or all of the bill they should discount it significantly but you have to ask. If not, tell them they can chase you and incur the costs for that. Then they should negotiate. 3) you can always ask the new place if they can get you on their plan as of your first day. They may be able to work with you. Still sucks regardless. Hope she gets better quickly. 5
Nevrknow Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Damnit man! Hate all that. Please do go the cash route on the medical. The difference can be phenomenal.May cost more than you like but still better than full blown rip off the insurance company prices. It gets better. I swear. 1

Still not sure if I'm more unhappy about taking a $30,000 hit on my first week up here, or getting @WarriorPrincess rejection letter on the 10 ct. box of Short de Punch!!!😆

Greenhorn2 Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Welcome to North Carolina brother! Your luck sounds about like mine. Prayers for your wife, hope she gets to feeling better. Tell her she's in N.C. now, next time the cat gets her to pour some kerosene on it and spit some tobacco juice on it. That's all the meds we used to have around here, the cure for everything from a bee sting to a broke leg. 1 1
djrey Posted September 16, 2022 Posted September 16, 2022 Damn, sorry to hear this. 😔 Hope she is feeling better soon! 1

Sprung Debbie from the hospital this afternoon, just in time for her 60th B'Day tomorrow! Her arm is still red as Rudolph, but nothing like it looked a few days back. Any word on those Walleye fillets I was looking for??? 🤔 Cheers Mike! Say hi to Dana for us!!! 3
