ROTT 2021 Nudie Review Thread

I have had a few PM's and it appears waiting 30 days was never going to happen for many of you  

Use this thread for first thoughts or a detailed review. Know full well that putting them down for 30 days will make for a much better cigar. 

Go on, take one and light it up. Put the others away 

 

When you are smoking them (be it now or down the track), gauge us on our objective. 

 

Our Nudies objective

To make quality cigars that we would readily smoke everyday. 

To deliver sizes that are largely underappreciated and/or unique.

To deliver a consistent quality cigar experience at an affordable price

So…I rushed home from work to put the flame to an N3 Maduro. I will say unfortunately smoking conditions were less than ideal. 40 degrees F weather, and work issues blowing up during smoking didn’t allow me to give it my undivided attention. 

That being said, very enjoyable cigar, with perfect construction and sharp burn. It reminded me of a meaty version of Monte with some spicier notes. I will definitely give these some downtime, and expect them to evolve beautifully. Smoking time was about 40 minutes.
 

@El Presidente Any word on how long the leaf is aged? Also, what is your preferred RH on storage for these. I put them in with 62 Boveda for the time being.

I have tried them stored  at 62/65/69/

  65-69 is preferrable for me. They will work fine to around 72. 

All leaf aged three years.

I tried an N3 Carlota in Colorado Rosado right after they arrived. I did the same thing back after receiving the first edition as well, so I wanted to compare initial reactions.

The first edition was still "hot" when released, with some ammonia that needed to gas off and a general immaturity--at least in the batch that I received back then.  Those issues disappeared in 30 days. The Carlota I tried from this new edition had no hint of any of that, so these are apparently farther along at release than the first Nudies were. 

My initial impression is that this is clearly not the same cigar as the first version but that there are many similarities. This one seems more cohesive and all of a piece than the first edition. Harmonious, not dissonant. All parts pull in the same direction.  I was impressed with the fact that a Carlota sized cigar would have the level of evolution over its length that I experienced with this one--the final third turned up the wick noticeably. My ability to separate and distinguish flavors has dissipated with the years but I could swear that I detected a citrus note for just a glimpse--orange zest--a first for me from any cigar. As was the case with the first edition, the style and flavors bear more resemblance to Cuba than to the typical NC cigars being marketed generally. I loved it.

Well-rolled. Even burn, no relights or corrections-solid construction, although a few sticks in the bundles had some dings and dents here and there no doubt due to the packaging constraints--no issues whatsoever. 

My guess is that these will mature noticeably over the next couple of years, like the first edition has been doing. I am a huge fan of the first edition and will do a side-by-side comparison in six months' time. For now,these have been transferred to an old spanish cedar cab for a solid nap.

Bravo to Rob, Hamlet and their entire crew for turning out a world class cigar at tremendous value.

N1 Lancero Colorado Maduro(2021) Review

Construction:  Tightly wrapped with no lines, no dents, no dings, sandpaper texture and is very very dense. Very dark wrapper, beautiful.

1st Third:  First few puffs were sweet & slightly spicy followed by cream. As I get down an inch the spice is up front followed by cream, earth and sourdough bread. The retrohale is so good and that is where it tastes similar to a cuban, creamy, graham cracker, i would say a sweet honey? hard to tell but good, followed by a light spice. yummy

2nd Third: Same as the first third but less honey note but a sweet aftertaste remains. Graham cracker, sourdough bread with spice.  The retrohale is so good with a creamy light spicy and sweet flavor. I find myself retrohaling on every other draw, so good. 

Final 3rd: Transitions to more leathery earth and spice. Slight twinges of a light caramel.  Retrohale still is where this stick shines, cream, graham cracker and peppery with notes of sweetness. Slight bitterness down at the 2 inch mark but that's because i took too many puffs too quickly and heated it up.

Final Take: Very tasty, surprisingly balanced for being so young. I could smoke these back to back to back already. Lots of flavor I would give it a 91-92 overall and can see it going higher with some age.  Looking forward to these in the months ahead. My only issue is I should have bought a lot more

Got the lanceros a few days ago. Thought I’d bring it out on the golf course. Great cigar. Wasn’t paying too much attention to the taste but it was overall under medium bodied. I remember smelling the aroma of my friend’s which I gave one to and it smelled like those lovely maple pipe tobacco’s. Overall lovely and can’t wait to see how these turn out 30/60/90 days and 1/2/3 years down the line if I’m able to hold off smoking them all. Great work Rob, Hamlet, and all the others behind the scene involved.

My two mixed packs arrived and enjoying a n3 Maduro. Absolutely wonderful! I’m challenged to smoke it slowly enough it is so delicious! Like everyone else, I regret not ordering more. Fingers crossed there will be another release of these vitolas.

I haven’t smoked a 2021 yet, but I’ve been hitting the 2019’s after seeing how well they’ve developed recently. One thing I notice is the immaculate construction - I find it frustrating every time I have a CoLa or Fundie that I end up having to re-light several times. But not with these. It sounds like this excellence continues with the new batch. Tip ‘o the hat to Hamlet and Rob, the 2021’s sound delicious!

I think we have 40 or so bundles of carlota remaining and I will put them up sometime next week once people have had a chance to try them  all. 

The plan is to have another production run of both Lancero/Carlota within the next 4-5 weeks.  I will make sure there will be plenty for everyone. 

I think they are great everyday cigars with a "vibrant personality"  You shouldn't have to spend a forutne on an excellent smoke.

Will the next production be the same blend and whatnot?  If that's the case, maybe I'll smoke a few ROTT and after an initial rest so I have an idea if I want to order more.

we won't change the blend on these until we have a blend that performs better than the 2021 edition.  I suspect they will remain this blend for some time but we will be having a blending week in May. Primarily the week is to go over the Dalia and Petit 109 but we always play with different versions of the Lancero and Carlota. If you don't experiment you don't learn!
