I smoked through a box of the same code and found it phenomenal. Different strokes, or box to box variance? You never can tell!

Bland usually means it just needs more time--some boxes are great immediately, and others seem to take years to show their stuff.

Hide the box for another year--it still may get there for you.

I have smoked probably damn near 1,000 Monte 5s in my life and I don't think I could describe one as being bland. I've had some bad ones, but never a bland one.

I think you got a bad box.

That's quite a canine team you've got.  Growing up we had a 80 pound German Shepherd and a 20 pound Papillon mutt patroling our 1 1/2 acre yard.  The little dog kept canine trespassers out and the Shepherd only got involved when necessary.

If the OP is used to something like a No. 4, the blend is different enough where I could see it seeming bland. I picked up a box of 5’s without having previously tried one, and I hardley touch them. I wouldn’t say they’re bland but they are missing a lot of what I like in a 4.

I had a similar experience last winter with some Monte #4’s. 1st couple of sticks were absolutely tasteless, to the point that I thought it was the early warning signs of COVID-19. The rest of them (so far) have all been true to form. It was an unusual and at the time spooky experience.

Following the get/don’t get thread I came upon this.

The Monte 5. ESL SEP 18.

I have tried and tried but even after months of rest there is no comparison to any other Montes I have. Bland, no evolution, nothing in it for me personally. Oh well.

Would be most similar to Monte 2 (both sometimes have something of a cinnamon or similar spice to them) and less similar to any others montes. Will likely have little evolution since it's a Perla though. Kind of spicier stronger than most Montes again like the 2 but perhaps more so as small cigars tend to be blended a bit stronger. Some FOH members don't like/get them but as with all cigars many like them too.

For the record, I've experienced a bland Monte everything except Monte 5 and PE. Those two are just blended in a way that they almost can't be bland. RyJ Cazadores would be the same. Can't really get a bland one. Bitter, tannic, sour--sure. Bland, not really.

I define bland as no flavor and no strength. Like unflavored hookah smoke.

As long as you are using the molasses stuff. If you have one with actual plain tobacco they have so much strength, though not that much flavour :)

I think you nailed what I meant. Took me by surprise, then I got mad LOL. No biggy, shipping them off Monday so we'll get a different opinion on what's what.

My hookah experience is extremely limited but every time I've tried one it's so mild and flavorless I don't see the point. I guess there are stronger options.

Yeah the usual molasses kind you get whatever the flavour is for the first minute or two and then it's pretty bland, even that tiny bit of flavour isn't too complex or strong.

I think the goal is to make it light enough so that non-smokers can easily inhale. And they definitely have succeeded at that.

Indeed.  I've had plenty of bland Monte (never had a 5).  When they're on, they're on.  When they're not, time does no good in my experience.,  I've also come to think they fail when your palate is a little burned out.  Unlike virtually every other marca, I steer wide of blind buying.  The best I've had though were Monte 4 from a provincial factory code I couldn't find mentioned anywhere.  I was bummed when I got them, then felt like I won the lottery when I finally cracked 'em out.

I like a the 4 better than a the 5. On a more important note, dachshunds are the best dogs known to man.
