Popped into the store today and picked up these. Finally it looks like the plain packaging madness is upon us. Not that I care about the wood boxes, but the fact that we the customers are paying for the repackaging of these to satisfy some lawmakers crazy tobacco hate kinda leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

O well, nothing we can do.

The lack of reasoning boggles my mind.

Given the amount of tax on those cigars, ruining the packaging is just adding insult to injury.

Why would they keep only one cigar with the actual band. Makes no sense.

Pretty sure he took it off so you could see what's underneath...

Over here, you're not supposed to be able to remove the PP band from the original. If you attempt to remove it, the glue is supposed to destroy the original band.

I removed it. Didn't really destroy the wrapper. But still.

Won’t surprise me if California starts doing this.

How exactly is this supposed to dissuade tobacco sales? People know tobacco can be bad for you, it’s not a mystery anymore. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to have plain black and white labels on liquor next.

Retailers should sell variations of these seperately for Plain Packageing markets. Customers then just refill them.

Might have to be a different manufacturer/supplier:

https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2019-107/page-1.html

"Package that does not contain tobacco products

(2) These Regulations also apply to a package that does not contain a tobacco product, if the package is furnished by a manufacturer of a tobacco product so that a tobacco product, primary package or secondary package may be placed in it after the tobacco product, primary package or secondary package is sold at retail in Canada."

Not sure if that only applies if they give such packaging away, or if it applies if they sell the packaging too.

Surprised they don't copy the Malaysia regional and make a decent cardboard box to put the original wooden box in, at least you have the potential resell value.  Basically rules out buying any cigars if you plan to age and sell in the future.

As I pasted above. Any box they hand out has to be plain packaging, even if it's an extra box. If it's cardboard it has to be that drab brown. If it's wood or metal just plain wood or metal. Some third party would have to do a proper box.

Edit: The importer for Canada has decided to just do drab cardboard.

Understood, but I meant to say, are they not allowed to just do a basic cardboard box around the original box? Why do they have to remove the original box as well?

Are they doing that with cigarettes as well?

Surely there must be an issue with repacking them and no longer being fresh for the months they might sit on shelves.

Yes any box, whether inside (primary package) or outside (secondary package) or provided separately (to contain either of those packages or the cigars themselves) has to be plain. Also doing it with cigarettes, and marijuana, although marijuana is a separate law.
