In praise of LGC MdO#4

Since these are now apparently  back in production, I dipped into my limited stash this evening.

Ahhh. This is not a cigar that makes you look like a gangster. It makes you look like a middle aged European academic. Fine.

They are troubled by a poor draw. Skinny, fairly long, about one in three is bothersome.

But the flavour... is incredible. Many people say fruity, and there is a remarkable deep, funky tropical fruitiness to them. Like durian, or way over mango, or papaya skin. But for me the dominant and delicious flavour is pork fat with a Mediterranean herbal edge. Pancetta and fennel. Maybe guanciale, the almost rancid pig cheek. Frying pan flavours. Full full flavour, often quite strong in body and strength too. The description printed in the box, which blathers about mild deliciousness is nonsense. It’s a serious, grown up taste.

I’ve never had a really old one, say over ten years. One day. In the meantime, chapeau whoever blends these.

I seem to rarely have draw issues with both these and PL Montecarlos over the last 5 years. Might want to lower your rH?

Aside from that, MdO4 are really great but I do believe there are few cigars that need a little time as much as these do. It's almost a crime to smoke them with less than 2 years on them. LGC in general needs at least that much time to start breaking out. They pretty much have unlimited aging potential. A 10-year old one would be right in the sweet spot.

Obviously I'm not the only one wondering if there are enough to make a cameo on the 24/24.  The suspense is awful.

The first few times there will be a stampede, but eventually it will be ok.

They do taste good.  I saw a guy on the subway the other day wearing two watches on his right arm while checking his iphone.  I also saw two guys walking down the street in midtown, while one of them was brushing his teeth strolling down the street. I don't think people care about ridiculous anymore.

Have read nothing but good things about these. Hopefully I will be able to catch them for the brief period they are ever in stock somewhere and get to enjoy one for myself

I've noticed when MdO 4 hits, they hit hard. Every vendor has them and prices are good. When I was in Cuba in Nov 17 they were in every LCDH stacked to the ceiling. There's only 2 leaves that go into the damn things and they don't make any other LGCs, so I'm sure there's a ton of leaf available for them.

Good to know that they’re hopefully not going to be one and done, and that a plentiful supply should abound. Given the high praise that these get almost on the daily, as a relatively new cigar smoker, I definitely want to try some and maybe stash a few boxes to weather the next drought.

That's great news! I bought a 6 er a couple year ago on here and regretted not buying a box ever since. It was one of the last times the came up on 24:24.

I'm a huge MDO4 fan. Thankfully, a nice fellow offered me the opportunity to go deep on them some years ago. Feeling pretty good that I still have three boxes with about 5 years on them.

I have some OSU JUN 02 and can’t remember how many years ago I last had one. Not a size I typically reach for but this thread has me thinking I should pull one out. I bought them here at the end of 2014 as part of the PCC Aged program.
