Double Corona - in other words somewhat larger and thicker than a regular Churchill size

@FireMedici appreciate the response. I was just looking to see what cigars would be popular choices by FoHs. There are no wrong answers.

The other layers. Of my box. Few gems for a rainy day.

Buying strategy is a tough one, depends on so many factors it's difficult to narrow down. My last 800$ to spend for a year? I'd probably aim for stuff that's smoking great right now with a mix of what

I often see people talk about 50 cabs, is this a wise purchase for personal favs & daily smokes?

50 cabs do best for the guys lucky enough to buy to smoke in 5 years. They take up less room, the cuban wheel is probably the coolest thing next to a V8, and there are 50 of them bad boys! It is a wise purchase if you are saving more than buying a couple 25 dress boxes. A daily smoker? It dont matter what it's in but I would assume that an aged cigar will do better touching cedar that inked paped.

In regards to the OP, if you are new to CCs and have $800, I would spend $200 locally so I could smoke now. If it's coming from overseas its going to need at least 30 days rest with 90 days being the best. The other $600 would be spent on as many quarter boxes as possible on clearance goods. Reason being that PSP are super oily and take a long to time to develope. I am too impatient for psp but if I come across am aged psp I jump fast as it's the best of the best. I'd also stick with regular production cigars as well. Regionals are more for collectors and they are limited to a certain amount of boxes and therefore are stupid expensive.

I disagree. If I'm getting a 50 cab, I won't be smoking them all in 5 years. Example, PLPC are great young, but that fantastic caramel doesn't develop till you get past 5 years age. Smoke half a cab young, and leave the rest for a long sleep. In the mean time, pick up another 50 cab to smoke half young.

What I meant to say is that they will not be touched for 5 years.

$800.00 represents what I spend in a month anyway,so I will always buy to age while smoking what I bought 3 ,4, 5 years ago.

favorites and maybe a new release,if I like it, I will put some away.

Bread and butter sticks,a box or two of La Gloria,Quay,or Robaina, 898, Lusi, BBF........

Lately the RyJ Tubo sticks have been a hot item for me,Parti Shorts and El Principe always a good buy.

I used to think I needed something from every marca, now I concentrate on solid favorites and proven winners.

With a budget of $800 a month and buying for years in advance may I ask how many sticks you smoke a week? I'm trying to see if I can afford this beautiful hobby as its grabbed me by the balls but still not too late to get out. I gravitated to CCs after a 2 pack a day Marlboro habit. Now I average 3 sticks a day. Its obviously more than cigarettes but $800 a month can be budgeted. I would love to get to the point of smoking my own aged sticks.

It's either

  • Getting many great regular production CCs (LCDH, Habanos Specialist Release) incl. 50 cabs such as RASS and Lusi

or

  • Getting excellent limited edition CCs

Would you go after some Exclusivos if at a good price?

What are Exclusivos, if you don't mind my asking? Is this a new release?

Thank you for the feedback. I am no where near $800/mth on cigars. But I really appreciate the insights into buying philosophy with CC.

Get yourself from Nudies No 1.  but only if you enjoy rich, fuller cigars.... the bonus is, if you find that they are not for you, you will have more than enough willing to do splits with you.

These are not Cuban. OP specifically mentioned CCs

Regional Exclusivos

Ok so these are normally referred to as "REs" as in 'Regional Editions', or Edicion Regional in Spanish. The 'E' doesn't stand for "Exclusivo".

I think you’ll be disappointed in the ER/RE selections if you intend on smoking them right away.  I think these are more often set aside for future enjoyment to let them reach potential.  I’ve read a lot of disappointing reviews for ones that have been smoked young.  In my experience, they show their true colors with some time down.  Load up on regular production and enjoy now. If you can wait to smoke, then go for it.

If I had 800.

1/2 box PLPC

Partagas d4

LGC MDO 4

Partagas 898.

Those 4 sticks seem to work for short term or long term (maybe I’d wait a bit on the plpc as I don’t love them young)

No ignorance, possibly my own shorthand. Double Coronas.

I have never tried the Sancho Panza, QD Coronas or Boli Tubos. Now the QD50 I like.

In January, the Mighty Dragon that I was trying to slay was the 50 cab of Lusi’s, but there were none to be found. Plenty of 50 cab PDC’s, though. I had spent that portion of my Pesos on a box of Lusi’s, and sundries...

Last month, my Dragon was a 50 cab of PDC’s. None to be found, so I bought a box of PDC’s, and some other sundries.

Plenty of Lusitania cabs to be found.

The sun always rises...

Juan Lopez #2 - PSP

Upmann Connie A - HQ/PSP

Both can smoke well now and age well too. Smoke half of each and age half of each for 2 to 5 years. If smoking now, dry box your chosen cigar. The oily PSP/HQ wrapper will burn easier and you won't be sucking too hard to keep the smoke alive. You don't want it to taste bitter.

OK, I'll double dip here...

If you want to make USD800 go further, then stay away from the more expensive REs etc. The best value is found in the classic regular production - but you have to buy good quality, which means 24:24*. Mondays and Fridays are your friend, because that's when Rob puts a lot of this kind of stuff up.

If you already know what you like, then this is easy! But I'm wary of recommending, eg. Party Shorts, JLS1 and RASS just because they can be great - because they may not be to your taste.

So my list might be something like: MdO4, Monte PE, PSD4, something from RyJ like Short Churchills, and can I squeeze in a box of RG Perlas? That would give me a good variety that suits my tastes. But it probably isn't right for you.

Bu if you want to smoke stuff now and broaden your horizons... then buy lots of variety in quarter boxes.

* Or a good bricks and mortar store where you can open boxes and make your own decisions.
