cbenham73 Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 If you had $800 to spend on Cuban cigars, what would buy and why? What would be your buying strategy?
FireMedic Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 Buying strategy is a tough one, depends on so many factors it's difficult to narrow down. My last 800$ to spend for a year? I'd probably aim for stuff that's smoking great right now with a mix of what's smoking good with less than a year. Ramon Allones Superiores are smoking great right now, PLMC to me are smoking great with right around a year. Very hard question to answer based on personal preference. I believe all BBF and HDM #2 are smoking wonderful within a year, but that's my take. It is subjective as is cigars in general 3
cbenham73 Posted November 24, 2019 Author Posted November 24, 2019 @FireMedici appreciate the response. I was just looking to see what cigars would be popular choices by FoHs. There are no wrong answers. 4
dominattorney Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 Depends on whether it's a one time splurge of 800 or it is supposed to last. If the former. Sir Winston's and a box of bolivar petite coronas. If it has to last I'd grab some sale boxes of psd4, mag46, punch punch, fonseca no 1, all of which can be found for under 200 on occasion, and round out the purchase with a 50 cab of plpc and maybe plmc. mix and match. You cant go wrong. 2
Burningman Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 Personally I am covered as far as my staples at the moment but that is where I would spend the money if I was short on daily smokes. Otherwise I would either go big with a 50 cab of Lusi or a combination of smaller 50 cabs to stash 2
cbenham73 Posted November 24, 2019 Author Posted November 24, 2019 @dominattorneyi like the idea of quality in quantities of some good marcas. That is the strategy I would take in such an opportunity.
cbenham73 Posted November 24, 2019 Author Posted November 24, 2019 I often see people talk about 50 cabs, is this a wise purchase for personal favs & daily smokes?

What king of profile do you like? any favourite marcas? if it were me I would tuck into standard catalogue, as the era of 25 cigars for a decent price, will be over before long. 1 2

If you are the type of person that burns through them as soon as they land then the vessel really doesn't matter. If you plan on letting the majority of the cigars rest a while then cabs are a good choice to age them. 2

cbenham73 Posted November 24, 2019 Author Posted November 24, 2019 @99call & @Burningman I only go thru maybe 1 or 2 sticks a week. Right now, I buy 5ers or 10ct boxes. In my efforts to learn more about CC I was curious to why some people go after 50 cabs when they show up on 24:24. 2
cbenham73 Posted November 24, 2019 Author Posted November 24, 2019 @Chas.Alpha that is something I would probably do. A box of PD4 or PSE2, VR Famosas, and a Exclusivo if possible. A couple of singles of some marcas I have not tried.
Chas.Alpha Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 For myself, I only smoke a DC maybe 3-4 times a year. Robusto, maybe twice a week. Petit Corona/Lancero, 5 a week. Such is my logic. 2

I think there is a comforting aspect to 50 cabs, and they are much easier to pace yourself with, if you want to chart their progress over a long period of time. Also they they are just nice objects. Add into the mix, that their are people who get attracted by rarity, for rarity sake. If you haven't got silly money to spend on cigars, it would make no sense for me. but thats just me. If it were me, I'd be stocking up on recent Sancho Panza Non Plus, Monte Especial 1&2, QDO coronas if you can find them. and Boli Tubos no 1. just depends what you like, ultimately thats all that counts 2
cbenham73 Posted November 24, 2019 Author Posted November 24, 2019 @Chas.Alpha forgive my ignorance, but what is DC?

So now that we know a bit more about your smoking routine I would say to keep with your strategy of buying small packs and 10ct boxes. Once you find those cigars you are sure to burn through and that you would like to taste with a bit more rest you can start purchasing bigger boxes. I smoke around 2-3 per week. More if possible. Less if I'm busy however I am at the point where I like to have an aged reserve of cigars. Take it slow and smoke multiple cigars of the same vitolas. The 50 cabs are very popular with people that age their cigars. There are also members here who smoke 5 + cigars a day. When you go through that many cigars buying in bulk makes sense no matter if it's 25 or 50 ct boxes. 2 1

RDB Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 The one consistent line here is: buy regular production classics. Beyond that, it’s all about what you like! 3
99call Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 Get yourself from N1 2019. but only if you enjoy rich, fuller cigars.... the bonus is, if you find that they are not for you, you will have more than enough willing to do splits with you. 2
