For all those members near or in the danger zones, please be safe and get out while you can.

A state of fire emergency has been declared for both NSW and parts of QLD. For the first time since the new danger levels have been created, the fire danger level for Sydney and surrounding areas has been listed as catastrophic. Of the 54 bushfires burning across NSW, 26 are listed as uncontained, with 13 listed as watch and act. Of the 54 fires in QLD, the blaze at Cobraball is listed as uncontrolled.

With the weather predictions today of hot, dry gusty winds, followed by a cold front expected to sweep through in the early evening that could see the intense flames quickly change direction.  Up to 20,000 people are expected to join the firefighting effort today, with the Australian Defence Force on standby.

The smoke from the bushfires are even visible from space, and beginning to reach New Zealand.

Be safe everyone.  Thoughts are with you.

Temperatures near 100°F (38°C), very low humidity and very strong winds expected later this afternoon, the critical time for those 3 catastrophic zones above will be in around 2 or 3 hours onwards (from the time of this post). Thanks everyone for the thoughts and good wishes

Catastrophic isn’t what you want to hear. Stay safe and heed warnings, my friends.

Grass fires are starting to pop up around Sydney. Many are probably due to tossing a lit cigarette from a car. The fine for throwing a lit cigarette during fire ban days is $AUD1320. You have got to be an utter moron if you toss a lit cigarette on days like this. Stepping outside is like standing in front of an industrial sized hairdryer on fullpower.

Southerly buster has come in, dropping temps dramatically (12C/54F degree drop in 11minutes registered at Sydney airport), with winds gusting up to 70km/h (44mph). Winds have yet to hit the main fire regions, but will soon, and the change in direction could increase the fire danger.

Fantastic job being done today by our emergency services in stopping and containing many of the fires. Sydney is pretty much in a watch and see situation, with some spot fires popping up here and there. But as always, there are idiots lighting fires for bbqs or burning junk. And several fires are suspected of being intentionally lit.

The red indicators are emergency warning level, yellow are watch and act, blue are advice warning level.

It should be always. It's a habit (a bad and disgusting one) and those morons don't care whatever situation it is.

Stay safe everyone! Hoping this will turn out to be a brief incident!

Scary stuff.  The province I live in has up to 1000 forest fires/year during the summer.  The people who are tasked with evacuations and fire fighting are top notch.  Stay safe everyone.  Have an escape plan and pre-pack any essentials you will need should you have to evacuate.

These two photos were taken yesterday in the morning and late afternoon.

The next two were taken today around the same time. What a difference the southerly buster made last night.

Bushfires are still going across NSW and QLD. Sydney is currently covered in a thick haze from the smoke.

Air quality today is very poor, with some parts of Sydney recording the highest levels of air pollution. Near where I am, the level of air pollution is ridiculously high. I can only imagine what it is like closer to the fires.
