ponfed Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 So there is this stick in my humidor. Can't for the life of me remember where I got it. I seem to recall it was a gift from someone... For the past few years, whenever I happen upon it I wonder if I should smoke it now or if I should keep it a while longer. It's been kept properly all this time. Around 65%RH 70 F...give or take. I'm sort of an impulsive person and until recently I never had the means to buy with aging in mind. Basically, it's probably the first cigar I owned that I didn't smoke in the first 4 years.... So what do you think. Anybody ever try this EL? Is it as good as it gonna get and I should smoke it now? Or should I keep going and keep it until I'm all wistful about the glory days of the 2010s (...) Light it up or put it back? Also, any of you guys have a similar dilemma?
havanaclub Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 Fire it up!Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
NSXCIGAR Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 Should be fine to smoke--in fact, it might be at its peak. The general consensus has been that this was not an outstanding EL. Positive reviews, but certainly no Sublimes or 520.
LLC Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 I’d smoke it. Find a weekend or a day off where you can relax, get your favorite beverage of choice, light it up and enjoy. That’s what cigars are for. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
Habana Mike Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 They're a very nice smoke to me. Quite good after 3-4 years. I'd say it's ready to smoke now. Fire it up and give us a review!
Piligrim Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 that's coincidence! smoked one yesterday, amazing cigar! it still has some potential, but very good now. glad to have couple of more and will smoke next a year later/
CigarAsh Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 I went long on the GEs when they came out. I've always thought they were excellent. I had a couple a few weeks ago at a duck club outing (just shooting clays this time of year). First third of cigar was good, but not great. I was afraid maybe they had peaked and were going past their best smoking period. Last half of cigar was outstanding. Cream and chocolate, very smooth medium body. Enjoyed it immensely. But still wondering how much humidor life they have left. Guess I'll keep smoking what I have just to make sure I'm getting them at their best.
torsion Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 Light up, I have one in my humi and this thread reminds me I too have to burn it!
ponfed Posted August 14, 2018 Author Posted August 14, 2018 Ok it's decided. Dryboxing it right now. Thanks all! 1
oliverdst Posted August 14, 2018 Posted August 14, 2018 Probably the last one I had was a year ago. In my memory all the ones I had were better than Sublimes and 520. EDIT: but I remember there was a strong metal flavour around 2013.

It'd been 6-7 years since the last. CigarAsh's description fits mine to a "T." I do think these are on the cusp of losing their humidor life. I say go for it.
ReturnFreeRisk Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 These are smoking good, not great. I sometimes offer one to a more novice friend because the chocolate still comes out
ponfed Posted August 15, 2018 Author Posted August 15, 2018 It has begun... Light bodied but spicey at the very start... interesting. 1
agentdaffy007 Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 Smoked it last year and like nsx said, not outstanding. I prefer my PSD4 of 2016 over this.
Doctorossi Posted August 15, 2018 Posted August 15, 2018 Send it to me. I'll test it for you and let you know in about a week.
ponfed Posted August 15, 2018 Author Posted August 15, 2018 So the short way to tell the story is that it's a tiny bit past it's prime but still a very good cigar. Very Monte with a bit extra. The first 3rd started light but spicy, slowly building up throughout. Vanilla and candied citrus rind started darting in and out of the smoke. By the second 3rd, it's firmly settled in medium strong and the chocolate started appearing more and more. Suggestion of coffee and leather make a cameo but only sporadically. The main profile is vanilla, chocolate and citrus rind on a canvas of rich dark tobacco (Think matured Virginia for pipe smokers). Last 3rd is pretty much the same, getting stronger in body and spicier. Can smoke hot at this point too. So pretty good, complex but sometimes it suggested some things that didn't materialize. Especially in the second 3rd, you end up chasing flavors that turn out to be suggestions and no more. Still, very good cigar but I feel I might have loved it even more 2 yrs ago Sorry for the typos and grammar error, phone typing not great. Ponfed
