RASS...so many people love them. Flavor, awesome, buy them by the case....some people say. I just can’t wrap my brain...or tongue(?) around it. The flavor isn’t there for me. Different years, codes and such. Just hasn’t happened.

Got me to thinking...my tastebuds. Maybe it’s that.

Cucumbers. Don’t like them. Never have. For me, if there isn’t even the smallest amount of cucumber in a dish, meal, sandwich...I can taste it over all the other ingredients. So much so that my local sushi place knows, no cucumber for me.

So k was thinking maybe that plays into it? Maybe it’s like one flavor, or lack there of inthe RASS ruins it for me.

Anyone else like this? Anyone else have a taste issue that ruins a smoke...can’t taste it or overpowers the flavor? Maybe it’s similar for hearing. Young people can hear decibels that older can’t.

full disclosure...I’m six cans into a new IPA that I love and cannot be held reponsible for what I’m writing. Also these RyJ Hernosa 4 that I just got are smoking nicely. Have a great day cigar brothers and sisters

If you have sampled numerous times from different boxes, years etal.....then it is going to be your physiology. You won't necessarily get what Joe Blow gets. He may not get what you get.

I struggle to enjoy beer. I really do. I wish I could. I can enjoy a stout but really anything else is simply a trial (malt, blonde, lager etal).  I can't tell you the number of times I felt like the only  kid not invited to his classmates 8th birthday party :D

no, on the contrary.

sure, sad you don't enjoy RASS as much as some, but there'll be plenty you do enjoy. the problem comes if your 'receptors' for want of a better term, are much less effective than others. then your tastes across the board are affected. but it does not sound like that.

where would be the fun if we all got exactly the same every time?

same with wines. the legendary len evans used to say, that wine was like women and we are not always going to like the same one. if we did, wouldn't she be tired.

I can relate.

Have to agree Rob and Ken. Everyone's tastes are subjective. I personally can't stand Bolivars. Haven't had one that I can say I truly enjoyed.

Same here.  Discovered I really don't like Partagas.  So many rave about how great they are, but that paprika flavor is just something I never really enjoyed.  In cooking I use it all the time for a base flavor and component, but the other spices usually drown it out.  With Partagas though, the flavor is more forefront, and just puts me off.

RASS are one of my go to.

The subjectivity is part of the beauty of the hobby.  Whatever you think you taste, you're right!

It’s a shame, in my home, my wife is the super taster, yet, detests cigars. I, on the other hand, have a terrible palate, yet love them. At this point, I’m resigned to identifying cigars that have distinct flavors I enjoy, however, I struggle to verbalize and identify what that flavor translates to.

Interesting you say RASS as I've read several times over the journey that people do not like RASS. For me it is a favourite.

My favorite part of a RASS are the cucumber notes! :o

Seriously, though, I've always loved RASS and Por Larrañaga for the same reasons: they are, to me, the perfect mix of rustic and elegant. I remember RASS being more earthy with more honey notes in '08 or '07 when I bought my first box; recent examples are much more raisiny and fruity.

Still, c'est la vie. I still struggle to enjoy Bolivar or Montecristo. I try one every so often, and am just left scratching my head at all the fuss.

Ha ha :P  Maybe it's not your tastebuds, maybe it's just your taste (as in 'sense of style, fashion, trend etc.'). :P

My Dad used to have a play on the old idiom, "There's no accounting for tastes."  He always played it as: "There's no accounting for some people's tastes!" :D

Fathers are great aren’t they.

When I would apologies as a kid and say “I’m sorry” his response was... “Don’t tell people you’re sorry, let them find out for themselves.”

Personally Ramon Allones and Cuaba are the two brand with no flavor whatsoever, at least for me, I have tried so hard to like them like Montecristo, Partagas or RyJ.

I read somewhere that our taste buds changes every 10 years or so, maybe in the future I will like them but I have been smoking cigars for 15 years so I don’t think I will ever have the chance to enjoy a RASS or one of those Cuaba Diademas that I have been saving for a special occasion.

Well, this explains it. Everyone knows that the dominant flavor in RASS is cucumbers. I have heard that they are dried and rolled into the filler.

From what I hear, RASS tends to be one of the more polarizing cigars out there. I’ve loved them myself and really hated some of them. The sweet fruity profile to me is what makes me keep coming back. But I’ve had some really bitter ones too.

Beer is an acquired taste.  I didn't like the flavor when I first started drinking, but by the time I turned nine, we'd worked out our differences!  ?

You're not alone. I find Cohiba's bland and boring yet others get hay and honey and other tastes.

Also I've smoked a bunch of JL no 2 and I get only a floral taste that overpowers everything else so I don't buy them anymore. I'd much rather smoke a SLR Regios.

Joe Blow.....So that's how it is. :moon:

Chocolate and vanilla. How about this? Know a woman who doesn't care for cake. That's right, cake. Not some flavor or type of cake, she doesn't like cake. There's a first time for everything.

Seems Cohiba is that way as well. People just don't get them or they love them. I don't remember hearing that kind of strong opinion about Montecristo, for example.

So far in my CC journey I have smoked exactly 1 RASS and got harsh/bitter spice and pepper. It was not pleasing to me at all and I got none of the fruit that so many reviews talk about. It was perfectly constructed though - so it’s got that going for it, which is nice haha. I have a few more that just hit the 90 day mark, think I’ll take another on for a spin and see what we have.
