MoeFOH Posted June 24, 2018 Posted June 24, 2018 There are various and very justifiable reasons for going to a desperately dirty piece of Soul Food. Convenience, comfort, severe inebriation... the list goes on. And sometimes it's a special event. Last night, it was State of Origin. Fair enough to say, I think, that's it probably one of the bigger nights for takeaway pizza joints in Australia. My go-to on Origin night is the Byron Bay seafood pizza (bacon is seafood, right?) with accompanying Jalapeno calzone from Donini's in West End. Absolutely delicious! Leftovers image attached. (Yes, I'm eating this right now... 9:40am here) Anyhow, I'm wondering what your favourite go-to Soul Food is? And what are the main causes that bring it out of hiding?

El Presidente Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Fried Chicken Once maybe twice a year the guy on my right shoulder (I have a guy with a halo on my left shoulder (lancelot) and one with a pitchfork on my right (larry)) throws down the pitch fork and goes "for F sake buy or make some fried chicken!". I like Larry. I don't eat fried chicken during sporting events as I find them too easy to throw at the screen. It always feel foolish to have to break out the WINDEX and clean the grease smudge on the screen where just moments before the referee was standing. No, these days fried chicken is a near religious event. If the catholic church made lent "40 days of eating fried chicken" they would certainly turn the PR corner in an eyeblink. Di and I will lock the door and open a bottle of wine. We will then sit down and immerse ourselves in every morsel. Damy you MoeFOH!!!! I am going to make fried chicken burgers tonight for dinner 2 2

That must be why KFC sponsor the video ref decisions.
alloy Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Was gonna say ribs, but it's got to be chicken fried steak and mashed taters with lotttttssss of gravy...
Popular Post stogieluver Posted June 25, 2018 Popular Post Posted June 25, 2018 In the Deep South, Soul Food has it's own special meaning. For me, a born and bred Son of the Deep South raised on Soul Food, my go to favorite meal is fried pork chops, black eyed peas, turnip greens, fresh home grown tomatoes, and corn bread. Wash it down with sweet tea. Had that for dinner last night and left overs tonight were just as good. 7
rcarlson Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 I think folks may have different interpretations of the term "soul food." I'm guessing some here mean what is sometimes referred to as "comfort food." Soul food 'round these parts is traditional American fare coming from the black communities in the deep South. Lower grade fried fish/chicken/pork alongside greens and strarches. Lots of fat -- lard is preferred. Cornbread always rides shotgun. Comfort food is similar, but it's usually what your momma made when you were growing up. 3
Stump89 Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Soul food for me is hot fried chicken, mac n cheese, and any kind of BBQ. I can't resist any kind of seafood either. I was lucky enough to have prime rib and steamed blue crabs this past week and it was heaven.
Ribeye Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Seafood, BBQ, Italian sausage and peppers, Figs. When is the next Fat Bastard contest,,,I'm afraid I can't wait for January.
zeedubbya Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Hot Chicken from Hattie B's. Hattie B’s is uh-mazing. Was in Nashville a year or so ago and had hot chicken at Hattie Bs and Puckett’s and somewhere else where it wasn’t as memorable. My wife kindly suggested I should maybe eat something else in Nashville besides hot chicken so I had a sweet tea brined pork loin with pimento cheese grits at Merchants, and it almost changed my life. It would be a tragedy if I didn’t mention both of my grandmothers made the worlds best fried chicken. One would serve it with mashed potatoes and gravy and the other with Macaroni Salad and Baked Beans. They put EVERY fried chicken place I’ve ever been to shame. Now that’s comfort food! As for Soul Food I am no stranger. When I was in college I had a friend who’s grandmother and grandfather would invite me over for dinner instead of him. I loved his grandmothers cooking (he didn’t). They lived in a really really bad neighborhood. About twice a month she would make Smoked Neck Bones with potatoes, alongside either greens or green beans which were so spicy they made you sweat. I am sure I looked out of place sneaking in and out of there a few times a month, but damn that food was awesome. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 3
LGC Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Braised oxtail when I can get it. It takes a long time to cook, and is available in very few restaurants. I grew up on the Jamaican version... with rice and peas, and fried plantains
MooseAMuffin Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 All this fried chicken talk reminds me of my family gatherings at my grandparents' farm. When the chickens were considered "fryers", we all got together and woke up early to butcher chickens in the morning and have a chicken fry for dinner. Huge family with upwards of 50 people crammed into a tiny farmhouse. Best fried chicken I've ever had and some of my best childhood/teen memories. Now-a-days, my wife makes beef and noodles that are amazing. Perfect on a Sunday after church.

Theres a great West Indian community here in Manchester. and whether is be Curried goat, Hard fried fish with sour peppers, it was, and still is all gold. Fav's have to be wood BBQ'd Jerk pork on pimento wood, and or Oxtail with Butter beans, Rice and Peas, with Plantain and Dumplin!. 1
GrouchoMarx Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 I'm not including anything that needs to be cooked, as I tend to see comfort food as ordering in. SOOOOoooooo.... pizza it is! Simple - thin crust, double pepperoni and double cheese. 1
kostadelasol Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Burgers or fried chicken for me Or a combination of both

BrightonCorgi Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 In the strict American "Soul Food", I agree with stogieluver choices. He picked the best. I would also add Fried Chicken. Fried Chicken may be our nation's single greatest dish. Raised on Cape Cod, Stuffed Quohogs and Clam Chowder are close to my heart in that "soul food" sense. 1
BuzzArd Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 In N FL it was amazing fried chicken, collard greens, mac n cheese, black eyed peas, corn bread and sweet tea. Having been away from Tallahassee a number of years the best I’ve had since was Sylvia’s in Harlem.
El Hoze Posted June 25, 2018 Posted June 25, 2018 Cheeseburgers! And not just any cheeseburger. I grew up in New Jersey, where we have a number of places that make basically the same style of burger (White Diamond and White Rose being two of them I grew up going to) that are thin “smashed” patties with tons of grilled onions served on a greasy white bun. I make them at home by grinding up a fatty cut of meat (eg, a ribeye or short ribs) and cooking/smashing them on a super hot cast iron griddle on my grill with both grilled onions and carmelized onions. The burgers get crispy that with a soft bun and some cheese are insanely good.
