Riverstyx Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Has anyone heard of aging cigars at 80rh? (ignoring the threat of beetles of course.) And is there anything to this "funk" or is it just TV bullsh$t? 2
shlomo Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Humidity has nothing to do with beetles. It is temperature you may be thinking of. I wouldn't risk it. Too easy for mold to find a very happy home in your humidors at that level. Assuming a temp between 60-70 degrees. 1
BuzzArd Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Ha! I love Giamatti's expression as he says, "the funk". I'd say all Hollywood. 1

LordAnubis Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 I find my humidor smells amazing at 70. But cigars smoke better at 65. I’ve never been at the 80 mark so can’t offer experience. If I could work out how to get that much humidity in there I’d give it a shot. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I've been noticing that my humidors don't smell as great as they used to and now you've clarified it for me. Since I joined FOH, I took my cigars from 69 down to 65 for aging and some to 62 for smoking. Definitely enjoying the smoking more as you say, but I do miss the stronger aroma when I crack open the humi. 1
MC4 Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Lawrence ages at 84% (sorry, I don't know what rh he uses to age, but uses 84% to bring dead cigars back to life) https://youtu.be/HwkUIRb2X6g around 8:40 minutes 1

"84 is great for bringing cigars back from the dead, or if it's ... troubled." Lawrence certainly has vastly more experience than I do, but I'm just gonna take his word for it on this one. I have never encountered any cigar trouble that I though 84%rh would solve.
benfica_77 Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Sounds like bullshit. That video was filmed at the Nat Sherman townhouse cigar shop in NYC. I just changed my CC humidor from 69 to 65% based on the expertise here on FOH
Wilzc Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 84% humidity solves most problems. It once brought my pet goldfish back to lifeSent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1

I know he also prefers all of his smokes to be on the "wetter" side of the RH scale. I couldn't believe he stores his cigars at 80% RH. But I guess that's just his personal preference after many many years of being a cigar aficionado. Good on him.
garbandz Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 I keep my medicinal marijuana at 80% humidity, and I stay high, just knowing it's in the closet.... 1

I'm not going to take advice from someone who smokes a robusto (or "Robustus" (sic)) in about 7 minutes. I guess he never has the chance to encounter the poor burn of a cigar stored at 80+ if he's *constantly* puffing the hell out of it. It must taste hotter than hades. 1 1
canadianbeaver Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 Dang. I thought this was a birthday thread about someone turning 80. Never mind. Will put my cake away. CB 2 2
LGC Posted February 27, 2018 Posted February 27, 2018 I like to go higher. I like to transfer my sticks to 89% RH (90F) when ready for smoking. 1

feral Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 80 rh isn't enough for me either. I've taken to running them under the tap then fellating it before lighting with cedar. It's about the ritual
LLC Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 I keep mine in the dishwasher. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2 2
