Actor reveals the lengths he went to for 'Darkest Hour' biopic

Gary Oldman has revealed that he gave himself “serious nicotine poisoning” after smoking nearly $20,000 (£14,800) worth of cigars during filming of his new Winston Churchill biopic film.

Darkest Hour, directed by Joe Wright (AtonementPride & PrejudicePan) stars Oldman, as well as Lily James, Ben Mendelsohn and Kristin Scott Thomas. It is scheduled to hit cinemas on December 22 in the US and January 12 in the UK. Watch a trailer for the film here.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Oldman revealed that he made himself ill after smoking 400 cigars over the course of a 48-day shoot.

“I got serious nicotine poisoning,” he said. “You’d have a cigar that was three-quarters smoked and you’d light it up, and then over the course of a couple of takes, it would go down, and then the prop man would replenish me with a new cigar — we were doing that for 10 or 12 takes a scene.”
Director Wright, however, said that the price was worth paying, adding: “It’s Winston Churchill. You can’t have Winston Churchill without a cigar.”

Or it’s just standard uk pricing. Or standard Aussie pricing.

I choked on their math, $50 a pop for RyJ Churchill's, someone needs to introdoce Mr. Oldman to El Presidente.

These movies benefit from Hollywood accounting... kind of legal money laundering. All costs are inflated.

Did anybody else who saw the movie think that the ring gauge he was smoking was off?  I know it is a bit picky but I have a friend that notices when films use more current ring gauges to depict cigar smokers of years past and always comments so I try to pay attention to how accurate they get those type of details.  It's probably more likely the camera added 3 to the ring gauge than anything else though.  I did enjoy the movie and thought Oldman did a great job.

Hang on, hang on . . . the math on that doesn't work out.  400 Churchills in 48 hours??  Even the fastest toking BOTL I know struggles to finish an R&J Churchill in under an hour . . . that's like 400 hours minimum to smoke all those cigars! 400 sticks in 2 days?  Hogwash! :cigar:

48 days...

Well, Winston went through 7, 8 to 10 cigars a day but yes, not all were lit. He liked to chomp on them sometimes.

Presumably, this sum will include the fee for the official cigar consultant to the film ...

He's a trooper!

His 400 cigars in 48 days still didn't touch what Mr. Churchill would have smoked in as many days.

I can't wait to see the movie!

In defense of those numbers I'm pretty sure he only slept a few hours per night with a little nap in the afternoon. He could also smoke anywhere anytime, that must've been great.

I remember when you could do that in the US, ashtrays in Malls, smoking in restaurants. I would love to be able to smoke at the theatre now. Damn non-smokers ruining our hobby.

This story sounds like propaganda for the anti-smoking lobby. It's not really news, and who cares? He chose the role, and this is what it called for, suck it up.

My understanding is that Churchill never relit a cigar. If his smoke went out he grabbed a new one. This accounts somewhat for his prodigious consumption.
