A place with a mañana attitude and a poor, indifferent, and inefficient government bureaucracy. A place without enough natural resources to be attractive to outsiders, but sufficient to self sustain the local population. A place with absolutely no strategic value, including its location as a point of departure for outsiders military forces. - This place would likely be some small remote island in the South Pacific. If I knew it’s name & you recognized it, that would be the wrong place.

I was going to say this sounds like a Paul Gauguin Polynesian daydream, but then I remembered what a very wrong human being he was.

Having benefited from traveling and living overseas as a young man, and doing same at my molesting Uncle Sam's behest when older I find that I am right where I belong.  Not that I don't appreciate exp

A similar thing was once said when a border patrol officer finished looking through my passport. :D

This is a tough question, considering I've only touched the surface as far as exploring this world. Only 15-20 countries I think. Gun to my head? Anywhere near the water. My top 2 favorite places I've visited have been Costa Rica--Guanacaste to San Jose, I love it all--and Bali.

Need more info:

- Same/current time period?

- Same current social and economic rank/standing?

Same social standing.   Born when you were born, but in a different country

Poland, since that's where my family originated (well half, but the other half came from Scotland and who the hell would choose to move there?!)

Second to that would be Switzerland. As I told my friend from med school when we went backpacking across Europe many years ago, "Even the least attractive person is pretty darn good looking."  And it's true.  The Swiss take pride in their personal appearance like no other country.  Prove me wrong- post of pic of a Swiss slob.  I don't think any exist.  They're a meticulous people with good (but borrowed) cuisine, are fiscally responsible, and hey- tax free Cuban cigars!

Viking era Scandinavia. Hands down.

I considered what my options would have been if it was a different time period- but I ruled out anything prior to the advent of antiperspirant and other personal hygiene items...

Yep, "Hands Down", and lopped off this an axe.  My bloodline goes back to the Vikings, and whilst the history is fascinating, I would prefer to live past 25.

To me it would be a lose lose, you'd be either being raped, or raping, or killing or being killed.

Not that I prefer todays PC bullshit landscape,  but it would of been brutal.

Check out "Valhalla Rising" if you've not seen it. great film.

I'd like to be born in 1959 so I could grow up in my old mans era. Would be fun to run South Boston with the Winter Hill gang and associate with Whitey Bulger! Organized crime always fascinated me and I'm Irish from Boston so it's always been a fantasy of mine.

Running with a bunch of crazed murderers? That's a hell of a fantasy.

As for me, as long as the time period doesn't change, I'd take any developed country lol I'm spoiled in the fact that I enjoy modern transportation and comforts. I think it would be pretty miserable after getting used to the ease of flying around the world, air con., or hell, unleaded gas and modern medicine. We have it too good, especially even 100 years ago.

I'd like to change my answer and combine these 2.  Let's take the winter hill gang back to the American West and fight the Indians.  Arrows and feathers on one side.  Leather coats, jeans, and harsh accents on the other side.

That would make a fine episode of Deadliest Warrior!
