LukeC Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 As I am relatively new to the CC world, I wanted to find out what are those CC's out there that smoke good both young and aged. I don't want to wait to age a box before I can enjoy a good Cuban vitola. I'd like to get started right away. Thanks!
LukeC Posted April 18, 2016 Author Posted April 18, 2016 Monte 4. But don't tell nobody. LOL!!! So I've heard. I'm not opposed to trying them though.

canadianbeaver Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 My vote would be for the new Monte Medias. Going through boxes, especially this winter!
earthson Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Fresh? They all seem to either need 1 year or 4 years minimum from box code to be great, depending on the brand and vitola. RASS? 1 year, bare minimum. HUPC? 4 years, bare minimum. The tops of my RGPC boxes say to smoke within one month of box date or wait over a year. They should say 5 years. Still, Partagas Shorts are a safe bet. If they arrive with too much ammonia and too many tannins, smoke some Fuente while you wait it out for a couple months. I dont smoke HdM, but that one comes up in these discussions all the time (Epicure, not Le Hoyo line). Have had luck with Boli RC as of late (which I normally don't prefer), as well as Punch Punch and RyJ Ex #4. I don't buy a lot of Cohiba, but I had some '14s in '15 that made me rethink whether the Cubans are either pre-aging or "cooking" the tobacco to make them so good so young. My secret (hoo boy) is to know what brands and vitolas are around that already have a few years on them. For instance, (I can't believe I'm going to spill the beans here!), I've had excellent luck finding '11/'12 HU Connie #1, '13 RASCC, '13 SP Non Plus and (oh god) '13 PLMC as of late. All world-class and all widely available. Now I'm off to order 2 more boxes of something before my Internet ramblings destroy my supply! 3
GavLew79 Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Having only been in the game a few years I can honestly say that most things in my collection smoke really well and aren't very old. '14 Bolivars; BBF, BRC and BPC all great, right now. '15 RASS good to go. '14 PSD4, glorious. '14 SCdLH La Fuerza, literally on fire. '14 Mag 46, delicious. '13 HdM Epi2, lovely. '13 SPB almost fading in my view. Smoke up! So many more. I wasn't into cigars in the 90s or pre-2003 so I can't say whether they smoke better younger these days or not. All I can say is my "young" cigars taste great. I've had several "aged" and "vintage" cigars that were just 'flat'. Some were great obviously, but they were fewer in number than the tasteless faded ones. That is the opposite to fresh current production in my experience. More winners than turds, by far. 1
LutzSpearo Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 I've also only been into Cuban cigars for the past three years or so. From the younger (2014, early 2015) cigars I've been smoking, some of my favorites are RyJ Churchills, Bolivar BF, RASS, RASCC, RAS. That being said, they all need a month or two down after receipt just to calm down. The RH your store them at makes a difference as well. I'm slowly gravitating to the low 60's %RH as many have recommended. I would also suggest ordering Robs current rotation sampler, I forget what he calls it exactly, my apologies. I believe these are mostly "younger" cigars that he's regularly smoking and enjoying most. In the long run, samplers are a more affordable and efficient way to learn what you like. If you have the funds, order two of any sampler at a time, I have found it better to smoke a cigar a couple times to get a reliable impression. Edit: I forgot, Rob has also posted a topic about his top 25 cigars from 2015 which is worth a read and would be a great starting point. 1

LukeC Posted April 19, 2016 Author Posted April 19, 2016 Now I'm off to order 2 more boxes of something before my Internet ramblings destroy my supply! Haha!!! Thanks for the insight! I'll have to keep my eye out! You think Rob still has some in stock?

ChefBoyRG54 Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Very nice list friend! Very much appreciated! Any particular box codes you recommend?Search for Robs best codes of 2015, there's a link for 2014 in that thread also 2
joeypots Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 I'd go with a box of Hoyo Epi #1. Great cigars, great size, and known to be good young. One warning. Your new cigars may arrive at your door too wet to enjoy. You'd be wise to rest the box in a humidor for a month and then take a few out and dry box them at something like 62% RH for a week or so. If you do this, you'll have taken every precaution necessary to get the true character of the cigars. My .02$ 1
GavLew79 Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Very nice list friend! Very much appreciated! Any particular box codes you recommend? You're welcome Chief. Pretty controversial question right there. Many chase box codes, many however, given the variance seen in a mastercase let alone an entire factory code, say it's a worthless endeavour. That said, ULA 14 Bolivars were very good. Search "Factory Codes" on here and you'll have a wealth of material to sift through and make your own mind up. Welcome anyway, and enjoy the journey. 1
Smallclub Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Small cigars: Rafael Gonzales Perlas Bigger cigars: Upmann No.2 (surprisingly) btw, chasing box codes when you're "relatively new to the CC world" would be a waste of time.

MrGTO Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 Monte 5's all day. They have legs to age so buy one box for now and another to age. Connie A's smoke great now aside from the initial rest from travel to my taste but I can see where they will be great with a couple years on them. SLR Regios are good young to me. R&J Ex 4's are great but make sure you buy boxes with a dark rosado wrapper that have a nice sheen. My favorite at the moment are R&J wide churchills. They are great right now. I can't stop grabbing one every time I go look for a smoke.
NicPac Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 I've been enjoying '15 Party Shorts and '15 Monte 5's a lot. I have a dress box of 15' RASS that aren't to bad either. They defiantly get better with more time but I'm enjoying them. Also PSD4's some well young for me 2
ThePolskiOgorki Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Some good ones mentioned here and in the post linked by John. I would have to say for me the Epi 2 and Boli PCs seem to be my two favorites young. I also have a recent box of ERDM Choix that have really got my attention. A lot of mixed opinions out there on the the Choix, but I have always enjoyed them. Now the best aged cigar I have ever had was a 2008 JLS#2 I smoked last year. I have only been enjoying this hobby for about 3 years now so I am no expert by any means. For me though, I think part of the enjoyment is answering the question you have asked for yourself, based on your tastes. Buying boxes and trying them over time is exciting to me. 1
eswary Posted April 28, 2016 Posted April 28, 2016 ERDM CS and RA Superiores have been exceptional IMO Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
