monkey66
The ones I saw/smoked bear no resembelence to the 2000 BS. Normal wrapper etc. If I was to guess an age it would be 5-9 years old.
Maplepie
I smoked the Romeo. First half was OK with a bit of twang, second half got harsh and nasty. Not a good blend. If these were any good they would have a Reserva band? Nice find, Paul! Can't lie, the wrapper looks pretty gorgeous. Are these out in Teddington already? And RE: Reserva band: Shan't be the case. Reserva/Gran Reserva is a different blend and the tobacco is aged - not the cigar. It's also a release of a very iconic cigar in the marca (don't mind the RyJ Gran Reserva that's coming out. That doesn't count ) as a flagship of the brand. This Pendejo, or whatever it's called, doesn't seem to have the same guts and your review seems to reflect that. But who knows. With the disaster of the RyJ Churchill Reserva, maybe the Montecristo would be a tad better. Did you end up smoking one of those RyJ Reservas I sent you a while back? How did it stack up to the Belicoso Pendejo??

The full box I saw/sniffed/handled and then smoked from had no resembelence to those dark knarly sticks (of which I smoked a few).
monkey66
It's kind of academic as none of us will be buying these poor sticks.

monkey66
how did they compare to those old RyJ Reservas? No relation at all. Tasted like an OK 7ish year old ex4 for the first half, bit of sweetness and twang ...then turned harsh and unpleasant.

surly
I'll have to be the voice of dissent. Despite the poor reviews I've read I wanted to try this cigar and to my surprise it was fantastic. I'm not huge RyJ fan, but this was one of the best of that brand that I've smoked. Nice aged tobacco flavours in the first half, then the creamy coffee flavours picked up in the second half. Not harsh at all and great burn and draw. It was about $40 here in BC. Maybe I just got lucky, but I'd definitely buy this again.

ChanceSchmerr
Aemon's a great local B&M owner in Victoria. I visited often, most of the time to get Boveda packs, but he always has a great selection of RE's. And he's kind of funny in the way that most of his responses to questions are "Oh, sure" LOL Has he managed to move back to his old premises? I felt for him after hearing about the restaurant fire that damaged his old store across the street.

He's a good guy - and his prices are better than some other shops in Victoria. I pop in there once or twice a month to grab new releases.

Sver
I did! Oh great! i got a RYJ anejados from his shop coming my way soon through a friend I moved from Victoria a year ago, but although prices are steep, Aemon is a legend and his service is second to none. I'm really curious about this one

jazzbass
Saw the Monte Churchills today and had a look at the Romeos a few days ago.. What struck me as being odd is the amount of ammonia coming from Both boxes.. Maybe I have a lot to learn but wouldn't cigars with a 08 stamp on the bottom ( Romeos ) be sort of free of ammonia ? Help me out here..
NicintheUK
I've smoked one of the R&J Añejados and it's strange but it tasted like it needed more time. For cigars with a 2008 box code that's really strange, until I spoke to one of the UK cigar specialists who I most respect who told me that he had cigars in keeps in Havana and it was his experience that they aged very slowly due to the Cuban climate and only 'aged' as we would expect when they were brought into the UK. I have to say the cigar wasn't in any way memorable and had nothing special about it, so it looks like what it needs is a little extra age. The Montecristo arrived last week in the UK so I hope to get to try it in the next few weeks.

I would have thought that the Cuban climate would accelerate ageing/maturation, relative to the UK climate?
CaptainQuintero
Strange, if so wouldn't the reserva and gran reserva editions taste fresh/needing time?

The sentence "very slowly due to the Cuban climate" is in complete contradiction with all the accepted notions about aging. No need to be an expert to see that aging is accelerated with heat and humidity. UK cigar merchants have the reputation to store and age cigars in conditions of low humidity, compared to Cuba, conditions that are supposed to enable them to maintain very old cigars.
monkey66
My feeling is the story with these cigars just shouldn't be so hard to know what they are. Saw one review complaining the box smelt of ammonia! To much smoke obfuscating the story of the smoke. If they smoked good who cares, but they don't seem to at the moment.
