nikonNUT Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 So this is a completely noob question but what are the advantages? As I browse prices I see that cabs of 50 are generally a buck or two more than 2 boxes of 25 (I'm generalizing). I know it's only a $1.00 and I'm not THAT cheap but it begs the question. What are the pros, cons, and general attraction? Thank you for the info and insights. Very much appreciated.
Laynard Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I'm just a noob as well, but I recall hearing cabs allow for better air circulation and aging. The price difference could be because more wood is used in its construction. ???
PapaDisco Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 No box press (if that bothers you), and I agree that they retain aroma better and that is good for aging. 1
fookite Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I don't normally see prices like that - usually the cab is cheaper in my experience.
Popular Post ramon_cojones Posted February 6, 2014 Popular Post Posted February 6, 2014 the advantage is you get more cigars 7
Skyfall Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 You don't have to drive your own car or find your own directions somewhere. Someone else drives you around for a fee. More cigars, no dress box, wood box, no box press, wax, ect. 4
polarbear Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 You don't have to drive your own car or find your own directions somewhere. Someone else drives you around for a fee. Boom Boom Tish! I've always been told that Cabs (either 25 or 50) tend to age better as they allow better air circulation around the cigars Also, I prefer the wooden SLB's over the paper covered dress boxes because I find they insulate the cigars better and help to creat a stable enviroment inside the box. This is a benifit if your RH fluctuates from time to time Lastly, 50 cabs just look cool!
ramon_cojones Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 i like the box press and artwork of dress boxes 1
tippexx Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 HMRC find them much easier to stack and bonfire! 1
Guest rob Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I can tell you for a fact that they are harder to play cigar box Tetris with.
madandana Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Not a fan of cabs. I like the look of dressed box. They stack better in my humi.I also like to open the dress box and see the row of sticks. To me it's also a pain to open and fetch a stick from a cab.
Oscar300 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 HMRC find them much easier to stack and bonfire! I was a go on the next RASS cab that came up...........will not bother now! CHeers
DrunkenMonkey Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 To me it's also a pain to open and fetch a stick from a cab. Really?
SCgarman Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Many old school guys love the cabs. Say they are better for ageing and allow better air circulation. But the fact is cabs seem to be on the decline and are slowly going away. I myself prefer dress boxes, like the ornate artwork on them and prefer the square shaped box press of the cigars. My preference.
TheLiquidGator Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Truth or myth that the better cigars wind up in the cabs?

Orion21 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 The simple solution to the box tetris issue is to have one humidor for dress boxes and one for cabs. Problem solved . I did this recently and freed up a ton of space. I also prefer cab. No contact with paper. I like the box art two, but buy cabs whenever I can. I can't prove they taste better but they do smell better. Most don't have the option to buy one or the other. But with a cigar like the Bolivar Belicosos Finos I don't know anyone who would opt for the dress box over the cab. 2

sw15825 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 There are various reasons why I prefer cabs. I do think they age better and taste, as well as smell better. In D boxes, the cigars get a more pronounced cedar flavor after some years in the box and therefore if they age longer than a few years I take the cedar devider/sheet out of dress boxes. I personally do not like an overwhelming or stronger cedar flavor. In cabs no direct contact with ceadar sheet. Also love cracking a cab and smelling the rising aromas of fine cuban tabacco!
ramon_cojones Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Truth or myth that the better cigars wind up in the cabs? Myth but for some cigars might be true like bbf, pure chance if cigars are better in a cab. Had some partagas shorts from a cab that were terrible so it's hit or miss. I've had rass from a dress box that were spectacular so for me it really comes down to if I want more cigars or not. It's all preference, I'll have some of both.
sw15825 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Truth or myth that the better cigars wind up in the cabs? I don't know for sure. Who knows from Cuba. I remember reading that "Cabinet Seleccion" Cigars used to be rolled from better tabacco and from my research began for the British Market in the early 20 th century. They were not just just cherry picked for looks and such. I don't know when this all ended and I would be interested if someone knows more on the subject.
Ryan Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Habanos dropped the ball when they didn't offer cabinets as a solution/compromise to the plain packaging issue which is gathering steam.
sw15825 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Habanos dropped the ball when they didn't offer cabinets as a solution/compromise to the plain packaging issue which is gathering steam. Right on! With a reversible lid branded on the inside. When you buy it, Flip it over!
FireDigger Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I like cabs because there are a little more room for air. Sometimes, the paper along the seams of the dress box would fall off with time.
