El Presidente Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 As I pointed out, I spilled coke Zero over my last laptop and it started to go kaput. Lost wireless, capability and it freezes up a dozen times a day. No problem...pop out and buy a Dell XPS. looks like a great machine. I bought it 10 days ago. I still can't use it. You see....my Dell XPS came loaded with Windows 8. Apparently Windows 8 will not connect to an internal server. So I spend more $'s to get Windows 8 "Pro". however.... Windows 8 "pro" is incompatible (for some reason) with our server. Apparently i need to spend $8k on a new server. True it is 4 years old now and is due to be replaced...but still. If there are any windows 8 devotees out there who think this is all a pile of crap and that my IT guy is taking me for a ride .....let me know if Windows 8 can connect to an internal server and the steps to do so. Cheers
TexAg Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 As an IT guy who frequently encounters this problem, I'd just drop money on windows 7 pro and load it on the laptop. That saves you money on a new server (4yrs isn't too old for a server) and you can use the laptop easily. In the mean time, here's a repair tool for Windows 8 PCs... riazp Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 just find an IT guy who likes cigars, slip a box of cohibas and he'll fix up the network in a jiffy imo. LOL.
Puros Y Vino Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Ask for a downgrade to Windows 7. The bit about needing a new server seems fishy to me. If that fails. Send the laptop back or ask forr a windows refund. You can renounce the license. Dell will either ask for the laptop back or give you a refund which you can use to buy an OEM copy online and install that instead.

CanuckSARTech Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Agreed. Different laptop, or Windows 7 / Vista. I've got a couple buddies in IT here, and other stuff (RIM / BlackBerry, but granted, they have issues of their own!), but everyone seems to be saying Windows 8 is one to avoid like the plague in their opinions.

jay8354 Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Go with the WIndows 7 Pro... Windows 8 was meant for tablets than laptops. Windows 8 seems like the bad old days of Windows ME Most businesses are still using Windows 7..... with good reasons. Ok, your server is a bit old but as the old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"
Random Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Well, Windows 8 has some problems wih old systems and software. But unless you are running something very custom on your 4 years old server, your Windows should have no problem with it.
Random Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Guys, please take in consideration that basically Windows7 and Windows8 have the same core.
TexAg Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Guys, please take in consideration that basically Windows7 and Windows8 have the same core. This is true, but Win7 has a full set of drivers available. Plus, Java is compatible with 7 as well. Win8 was a rushed development to keep up with the competition. It's like when Microsoft released Vista. Regardless, both should be compatible with Win Server 2008 and definitely with Win Server 2012. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
OZCUBAN Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 apart from buying a Mac I would suggest getting your I.T guy to load Windows 7 on to it which by all account is heaps better ,windows 8 is akin to a 64 bit version of Vista hope you get it resolved soon cheers Steve

Ken Gargett Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 You are the Mr Bean of the technology world. seriously? you've dropped the camera remote into a bucket of water; tipped coke into your laptop; i found your tv in a pool of water the other day; and anyone who has seen you operate the video for any review will have compelling evidence condemning you as the weakest link! you make homer simpson look like einstein.
Ryan Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Get yourself a notepad, a proper paper one, not one of those new-fangled "plug-in" ones. Hire a messenger boy with a crisp red jacket and hat. Show him where the post office is and have him running back and forth. Much less hassle and proabably cheaper. Have him doff his cap when he greets you. "Morning Mr. Ayala, iron your newspaper for you, Sir?"
AndrewNR Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I'm not a windows 8 fan.. too much going on.. everyrthings moving towards an Iphone feeling interface.. Which is and always has been bullshit.
Duxnutz Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Up until this point I thought everyone was still running Windows 95. Guessed wrong...
polarbear Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Up until this point I thought everyone was still running Windows 95. Guessed wrong... Progress Peaked at MS DOS
polarbear Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 On a serious note... What the costs involved and warranty implications if buying new laptop and having it reloaded with Win7? I've need a new lappy for a while but am not ready to live with Win8 just yet
godpheonix Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 it took me about 10 minutes tinkering with it to figure out that windows 8 is to be avoided at all cost ! listen to those that are saying to install windows 7 pro, Rob. you'll be avoiding a major headache and spending lots of moola !!
