Holysmokes Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Okay, where to begin... I called Bob at Aristocrat Humidors to simply "ask" a few questions regarding pricing, options and delivery. I have been looking at his custom built humidors for a day or two, after very positive feedback from people on this forum. My budget was a maximum of 1300$ Well to make a long story short, I hung up and I had spent 3500$ on a humidor... Now I am thinking maybe I shouldn't have (but I keep telling myself it's too late now that the order is placed. Great way to justify keeping the humidor hahahahahahahaha) I have to admit, the humidor is AMAZING temperature/humidity controlled, beautiful craftsmanship. I have heard nothing but good things about Bob and his humidors. So if anything, everyone who suggested I look at Aristocrat humidors IS DIRECTLY responsible for this. Man, my wife was not happy that I was about to spend 1300$ in the first place... All this too say, if you don't hear from me ever again on this forum, you know what happened : ( If anyone has any similar stories regarding compulsive spending on cigars and accessories, please feel free to share. They might make me feel better.
Blackham Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I spent $500 on a Daniel Marshall (original budget was no more than $100) and didn't have any regrets. With around the same amount of money, a vacation may last you a week, a motorcycle may last you 10 years, a fridge for maybe 15... but this is a lifetime investment, enjoy
bc8436 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Wow $3500! Did you end up going with a huge humidor?
Holysmokes Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 Wow $3500! Did you end up going with a huge humidor? I ended up getting this : http://www.aristocrathumidors.com/aristocratplus48.html (it's the first one on the left with 2/3 glass door) The reason it came up to 3500$ was due to the temperature control. If you purchase this humidor without temp control it will cost 1399$ Also, I added extending shelves with a glass door. Since I got the glass door, Bob suggested I buy a second peltier for the temperature, which cost an extra 400$ I simply can't wait to see this thing
dicko Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 You will be looking at your humidor in 10 years still loving it and your $3500 will be a distant insignificant memory
Holysmokes Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 You will be looking at your humidor in 10 years still loving it and your $3500 will be a distant insignificant memory I'll try to remember that line when I talk to my wife!!! I will let you know how that goes := )
Dbone Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Hate to tell ya brother, but those puppies work best when filled LOL Just a little humor honestly. So there's your reason to the Mrs why you need to by 50+ boxes STAT One word of advise. I too have a THC Aristocrat and loose cigars don't seem to store well. In my experience, either they get fat, wet, bland, loose flavor, etc... Although kept in their boxes the cigars are not susceptible to temporary fluctuations in humidity and temperature, which comes with the temperature controlled units. Congratulations on the purchase. I'm laying new tile and counter tops in the kitchen, painting the bedroom and hanging new closet doors, to get the blessing on a second cabinet LOL

Actually, to be honest, I always found loose cigars are harder to store in all my humidors. Maybe it's just me. I find cigars in a box are always much more flavourful.
Montaigut Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 If anyone has any similar stories regarding compulsive spending on cigars and accessories, please feel free to share. They might make me feel better. Not related to cigars at all but here is my story: - Went out for a coffee and donut (Tim's for those Canucks out there). - Came back with a Toyota Celica!! - AND THE WIFE WAS WITH ME ALL ALONG... Go figure. But in all fairness, that was before the kids...

Have you found any solutions to the problem? I'd hate to end up wasting the space of the drawer in mine. First ideas that come to mind would be to store NCs with cellophanes, or perhaps put them inside ziplock bags (but not closed)
cigcars Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 *Though it's ancient history I'm still mad to this very day about $800 I unflinchingly threw away on 2 boxes of Havanas that I'm now pretty certain weren't the real McCoy. Can't really remember what one box was but the other was some Don Alejandro Robainas. Mm Mm Mm But my Daniel Marshall Humidor I got at a bargain directly from the company for $450 I'm happy about to this day. When my housemate from her room overheard how much I paid she yelled out for me to hear, "THAT WOULD HAVE FED A FAMILY FOR A MONTH!!" Still very, very happy about THIS transaction!
shrink Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 All this too say, if you don't hear from me ever again on this forum, you know what happened : ( The humidor will make a beautiful coffin.
LuciusSulla Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Well, I feel a lot better about the $160 I spent on cigars in an impulse buy yesterday. Thanks for putting it all in to perspective for me, Holy!
beamer Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 There's nothing jewelry can't fix. This man is on to something. Also, BEAUTIFUL humidor. Looking forward to seeing pictures when it arrives.
Tarks Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I think you did very good only spending $3500.00!!! It could have been waaaaaaay worse! Great pick up btw! Congrats!
laficion Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Man, my wife was not happy that I was about to spend 1300$ in the first place... All this too say, if you don't hear from me ever again on this forum, you know what happened : ( Holysmokes, I can't emphasis enough, I've said it so many times, how important an excellent Humidor is for cigar smokers . However, I know that a great humi is never cheap, it's a work of art and the worksmanship commands a certain price. I had been smoking for about 10 years when I finnally decided to get myself a serious Humidor and stop playing around with old boxes that I would customize into something that would almost resemble a Humidor . My cigars should get more respect then what I was giving them, they needed a place where, like great wines, they would rest and mature ,so, I got myself a well known name which is "Elie Bleu", the Humidor was just what I was looking for , looks, craftsmanship and above all, It would last years and years. One thing that I didn't know at the time but found out later was the fact that the interior of my Humidor was one of the last models of Elie Bleu to be made of Cuban cedar, today, they are all made with Spanish cedar. Anyway, the Humidor cost a very, very pretty penny and when my wife asked me, "HOW MUCH ? and after I told her, "WHAT!! for a box ?" OH well, to make a very long story short, I was more or less obliged to buy her a new dishwasher which I did. This was in 1981 and the dishwasher has long since left us to join all the others in dishwasher's heaven. As for my Humidor, well this June my Humidor, will be celebrating 30 years of great service and my cigars are also well seasoned thanks to the aging of the cedar interior. Proof that, you get what you pay for, don't settle for less. But also,Revenge can sometimes be sooo sweet . (sorry Monique) Here are a few Pics
benjaminbbush Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 The humidor will make a beautiful coffin. And it is temperature and humidity controlled too!!!

Holysmokes Posted March 30, 2011 Author Posted March 30, 2011 Everyone here has been very helpful. I managed to have a few laughs at some of the posts (and yes the humidor would be my first pick as far as coffin goes) And I will most definitely update this thread with pictures in 6 weeks when I receive the humidor. So I actually called Bob back today and changed the order... I picked up the Aristocrat M plus instead of the Aristocrat Plus 48. The price is pretty much the same but the dimensions are much better (for my needs) with the Aristocrat M Plus - 38"W x 17"D x 48" H The original humidor I opted for was more of a long standing one. The M Plus is more of a wide/large bookcase humidor. On a different note, alot of the people here have actually made me realize that although this is an expensive and pretty impulsive buy, it is also a great investment. I do feel a bit better. Thanks!

First ideas that come to mind would be to store NCs with cellophanes, or perhaps put them inside ziplock bags (but not closed) Weird, I have the endtable THC with 2 drawers up top for loose cigars, and they are filled to the brim as well. They are all in FANTASTIC SHAPE. I wouldn't worry about storing the loose cigars up there.
Peter11216 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 This is not a cigar related purchase . . . well, not directly related. This weekend I brought home a 3 group commercial espresso maker. It is too big to fit on any countertop we have currently. Thus it will require its own, specially built. It is, for all practical purposes, unpractical. And, on top of that, it needs to be disassembled and cleaned, which means I'm in the basement in the evenings learning about heat exchangers, and carefully taking apart a machine I basically know nothing technical about. (My wife was, god love her, pretty supportive about this endeavor, but as I continue to mention things like - having to install a 240v line, rearrange the kitchen, etc. . . . ) As you noted, the humidor is a good investment. This machine is more or less a stupid thing to have for home use. The amount of power it needs to brew one cup of espresso, probably doesn't justify turning it on, rather than, say, walking over to the cafe. But still pretty cool. Hope to have some nice espresso, cigar pairings, once this is up and running. Hope this bit of idiocy helps you feel better about your comparatively wise purchase. Best, P Everyone here has been very helpful. One the Bob told me when I first talked to him, was "Buy bigger than you think you will every possibly need." He was right.
Fuzz AI Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Not my story, but certainly a stupid move... I was catching up with a mate and his wife for a round of golf one fine Saturday arvo. While they were waiting for our tee off time, she mentioned she'd like to go to DFO (a factory outlet complex) and do a little shopping. My mate Matt, not waiting her to be spending a couple of hundred bucks on clothes, decided instead to pop into an Audi dealership to see if they had the new A4. Upon arrival, they found out the A4 was not to be released until the following week, but the salesman said he could let them have a sneakpeek. After chatting for about 30 min, Matt's wife commented that she didn't like the red colour on the display model, she preferred something a bit darker. Realising he had a pidgeon, the salesman took them up to the storage garage and showed her an A3 in a deep garnet red. "Something like this? The new A4 will be available in this colour." "Yes! I love this colour!!".... Matt is beginning to realise his mistake at this point. Perfect! 20 minutes later, they are walking out after signing the paperwork and putting down a deposit. So from trying to stop the missus from spending a couple hundred bucks for clothes to spending $70k+ on a car, I think that counts as something really stupid.
CanuckSARTech Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Holysmokes, Congrats on your purchase. Those are definitely some nice units that Bob puts together. Well done. Sorry for any fate that may befall you from your wife, but that's another story. But I do have a question.... Why did you choose to go with the temperature controlled version, and thereby spend the extra bucks??? Now, I don't want to dissuade you from your purchase, or to try to talk you down from a sale for Bob. But, with where you live, do you really have a need for a temperature controlled version? I live in southwestern Ontario, south of you, and my cabinet doesn't need temperature control at all - it's in a finished basement rec room, and my whole house is air conditioned and climate controlled, so there's no reason for my humidor cabinet to be so also. Just honestly curious, that's all.
