FOH Health Check

Recommended Posts

Word has come down that I need to lose 10 Kilo's quickly. Had a health check Saturday and the doctor O'sullivan asked me a straight question about my lifestlye. I gave a straight answer. It was all that I could do to get him off the floor laughing.

Heart and blood pressure fine. Cholestorol under 3. I thought I was big boned but apparently I am fat and due to some sexless friendless tofu eating cow who wrote a health chart for the Government...I am one kilo off Obese and this could lead to my children following same as well as global warming and homeless polar bears.

So I have been given a challenge. 10 kilo's in 10 weeks. I pointed out I didn't want to lose any muscle mass. I picked him up off the floor again.

I am a relatively sensible individual and I understand Fad diets are bad.

I want a Fad diet. Now. Preferably one that allows wine and cigars in serious quantities.

Over to you. Give me the best fad diet which meets my lifestyle.

Rob and Colt...I don't want photo's of your pecs. The forum has seen enough. Ken.......there is absolutely nothing you could add that would assist me.

Thank you in advance. I am currently having diet coke with my rum. I am committed.

Sea-food Diet

You see food and you eat it ;)

Jenny Craig

South Beach Diet

Etc

Unfortunately, all fad diets are just that, fads...........diet and excercise are the only sure ways to lose weight the right way

Ideally a pound a week is the best method to lose weight healthy, hardest part is not losing it but keeping it off

I know I am no fun but Health Science was my major in college with a Minor in booze and broads

Diets never last long and old eating/drinking patterns inevitably return. While the fad diet might work for a limited period of time, you will in most probability find yourself back at the same weight or higher in a few months.

Weight management is not a quick fix, it's a lifestyle change.

It's up to you if you're willing to give up or limit your "comforts".

must say i was thinking the other day, when you hoed into that fifth cheese kransky, that there was a lot more of you than there once was. i thought thank god i am not the only fat bloke on the balcony.

a few years ago, you ran a comp to lose weight. do it again. i also need to drop 10. bloody hard.

i have a fantastic doctor. encourages me to go to cuba.

instead of years of fighting to get cholesterol down, when i first saw him he said to forget it with my leifestyle. put me on one small tasteless pill a day and it more than halved in 6 weeks.

he accepts my lifestyle is not conducive to things like that and works around it, but is very firm re losing weight.

before i saw him, i was on a daily vitamin regime with milk thistle, vit B, fish oil capsules, a few others. his advice. stop all that immediately and use the money i saved to buy a better bottle of red.

love my doc.

P90X----Great workouts without buying a home gym and it really works. Knocks off pounds and tones the body. There is potential for muscle building.

That's just started to be advertised on infomecrials down here in Oz. With Rob's lifestyle, there is no way that's gonna work for him.

You can't hold a glass of Shiraz while doing that workout, and there's serious risk of internal burns when he accidentally inhales his cigar while trying to breathe. ;)

due to some sexless friendless tofu eating cow who wrote a health chart for the Government...

You couldn't have summed that up any better. ;)

I did the 10kg at the beginning of the year. Went from 88kg to 78kg in 8 weeks. There were three approaches I took:

1. Ate an extremely low amount of carbohydrates. No bread, no beer etc. Took lunch with me to work every day. My daily eating pattern looked like this:

Morning: Museli with milk

Morning snack: Celery stick

Lunch: Boiled chicken breast

Afternoon snack: Boiled egg

Dinner: Broccoli & cauliflower

Drink: Only tea and water all day

Cheat day was Saturday where I ate whatever

2. Excercised only twice a week. Did some interval training or just lifted weights (somehow I doubt this had any effect on my weight loss)

3. Stopped boozing (was drinking one day a week only!)

Now I'm back up to 83. Why? Couldn't keep off the drink. In fact I think if I quit drinking altogether, or drank only once a week, I wouldn't need any special diet - the kilos would just fall off. FYI, I'm having at least 2-3 scotch and cokes every day. Drinking very heavily on Fri-Sat-Sun.

I also think that low carb diets are not good for the body. Best thing is a balanced diet. You will lose weight slowly, but keep it off, because you will change your eating habits gradually, and it will not be such a stress for you.

If you can't stay off the booze, then drink wine mostly. As much as I love wine, I couldn't stay away from the scotch. That is my downfall. It was, however, a wonderful feeling when I saw the scales at 78kg. I felt on top of the world. Shortlived...

At the moment, all I'm focussing on is eating less calories than what I burn each day. That means I can eat meat, bread, some fatty foods, dairy, whatever. But I feel happier now. Although I'm only losing about 200g a week, which is annoying. But in long run, that's going to benefit me.

Alternatively, come to Russia! Having a big belly is a sign of wealth here! Chicks love it too!

the painful part

Cut back on the booze mate, trying to lose weight whilst hitting the vino and beer is a near impossible task. Try and limit yourself to one glass of something a day.

the less painful part

Sort the rest of your diet.

- try to cut down on anything that nature hasn't provided (anything with synthetic ingredients)

- replace whites with browns - brown rice, wholemeal pasta, wholemeal bread etc

- increase your fruit and veg intake (vegetables can be almost limitless)

- lean towards tuna, lean chicken etc and away from rib-eye steaks, streaky bacon, burgers etc

- accept the fact you're no longer the elite athlete you once were and stop eating like a horse.

the best bit

You're fortunate enough to live in one of those places where the great outdoors and all it offers is right on your doorstep. Plus you have son(s) who play sport and a dog. No excuse mate, get that heart pumping ;)

Without sounding like a nob, I know a bit about this stuff and recently wrote a plan for a mate who since dropped 15kgs in 2 months, so if you want pm me and I'll post some typical menus etc. Exercise and diet - both work on their own but combine the two and you'll be unstoppable. To do this you've got to want to - it's all mental mate - get it right upstairs and you'll be on easy street.

has to be my favourite American saying: 'broads'

Like food, broads can have varying effects on your health, depending on where you get them...

Maybe one of those electro-shock ab workers that sends a powerful jolt of electricity to the ab muscle and stimulates the the toning of them. Never tried one, but I imagine sips and puffs could be timed and taken between the jolts.

I'm relatively lean as is but I had a few fights in muay thai over the last 2 years and had to lose weight.

best way to go about it was eating the same amount but changing the pattern. So instead of 2 or 3 big meals a day have 5-6 smaller sized meals. Also no carbs in the evening (avoid pasta etc after lunch). Always have a piece of fruit first thing when you wake up because it kicks metabolism into gear for the day.

Worked for me (and dozens of people at my club whether competing or just losing weight) and I still had a quite drink a few times a week (no beer, wine or spirits neat). I don't see why cigars would affect weight loss at all.

I find the 'when/how much' approach is more important then 'what' you eat.

Eat lots for breakfast.

Eat lots for lunch.

Eat as little as you can at dinner.

No carbs after 1pm. Zero.

If you must snack - cottage cheese, ricotta, etc... proteins like this will fill you up and reduce hunger.

Simple to loose ten kilo's you need to run 10 kilo a day and eat 6 times a day in very limited quantities. Wine and Champagne is OK but no superalcoholics. Cigars OK!

Here's the BEST KEPT SECRET to losing weight and apparently nobody has ever heard of it.

Ready...

Eat fewer calories than you burn in a day.

If you want to eat more, move around more (ie exercise). If you don't want to move around more (ie exercise) then consume less.

Pretty simple.

If you get that down, the rest is easy ;)

The only thing that has worked for me, Pres, is to half your portions at mealtime and cut out extraneous snacking between mealtime and at cocktail parties. Limit the alcoholic drinks at playtime and smoke all you want because cigar smoke contains zero calories!!

Have you looked into the Warrior Diet at all? The diet is based around the way humans evolved to eat and allows you to drop weight easier than you would ever think. A very basic overview: you fast except for dinner time, when you can have a 3 hour window of eating/drinking what you want. If you need to snack during the day, only fruit, nuts, or small portions of lean meat. To each his own, just an idea and an entertaining book.

You'll probalby hear people whine that fasting or skipping meals causing your body to go into "fat storage mode" or decreases your metabolism. That's all baloney and has been disproven by numerous studies. Suggesstions that this may be true arose earlier this decade as people who ate like that were less likely to be overweight. This was actually linked to them just having better eating habits anyway. Also, fasting is better at regulating your insulin than eating small portions regularly. Just food for thought :D
