We talking charged and convicted, charged and acquitted, charged and awaiting trial?

Sure. Here's some counter-intuitive advice. You know, like telling Captain Edward Smith on the Titanic to speed up towards that iceberg and bounce off it from the bow of the boat, then turn and safely go around it. Because the average person thinks they could steer a boat that size and not have the iceberg graze the ship.

If it was me, I'd try to treat this person like any other neighbour in my street. I know, it's hard to do, but bear with me for a bit. The average murderer kills someone they know, that is, a very close and highly annoying relative. Usually, it's not in cold-blood, it's an irrational, emotional act with life-long consequences, sadly. Have confidence in yourself and be polite with this individual to start off with. No judgement and no contempt. They would be already carrying some stigma. As you get older you realise the maxim that you can only control yourself is true. There's no value in getting upset in what anyone else does contrary to your feelings and wishes. That's obviously a challenge to maintain that form of thinking in everyday life. But it's better to try to start things in a positive way and see where things go from there rather than to shut off this person completely and then have to deal with them as your neighbour afterwards.

That would probably be my approach if I didn’t have 3 kids. But I know for a fact there is drug use in the house because I can smell it. Context would be a big help also, did he murder a childhood abuser or was it an uncle that refused to lend him money for drugs? Our government prioritizes privacy over everything else to a fault sometimes.

Yeash, total publication ban. On the one hand, the judge seems to believe that the public isn't at risk. On the other hand, this country is weak on crime and is running a catch and release program ($30k isn't much of a deterrent).

I wish I could be of more help, but good luck @Chitmo. Have they set a trial date?

Cheers!

Dude's on parole. If you smell it, you can report it, and if he is found to be in violation of his parole terms, he won't be living next to you for long.

I have no idea what the laws are with regards to being adequately prepared for effective self defense in your jurisdiction, but if I were you I'd want to be doing whatever is legally permitted.

I'd keep an eye on him for sure, but I would treat him like everybody else.

I used to live in one of the worst neighborhoods in France and I wondered at the time how many murderers, caught or not, I could cross path with without knowing it...

The numbers are almost the same in every big city in Western countries, it's around 1/1000.

Put into context it means that when you take public transportation your chances of meeting a killer every single day are pretty high and over, let's say a month, statistically you'll meet a dozen without ever suspecting it.

What it does imply in my book, is that one has to be aware of his surroundings all the time, but I wouldn't worry too much, most of the time there's a context behind a murder.

Yeah, this isn't what John is describing above. While the details are sparse, this is a nutjob, who along with an accomplice probably tried to rob the senior and ended up killing him in either a tussle or outright intention. At the very least, get some cameras installed with a field of view of where he's staying in case he exits the home on his own. If he does, report it.

This condition here.  "Jefferies must abstain from drugs and alcohol and have no weapons." Doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies.  IMO.  MYOB. This isn't someone you want to invite over for a beer.

I would have him over for a few cans of Coors Light and a 2018 Dimplomaticos ER Phoenicia.

A lengthy criminal history and convictions are described in this article:

https://www.saltwire.com/nova-scotia/halifax/pair-charged-in-oct-29-homicide-make-video-appearances-in-halifax-provincial-court

A career criminal with active pending charges who, while awaiting trial, murdered a 70 year old. The fact that he was granted bail with that record is stunning.

You may be living around unaccused murders as well. Just go on with your life.

Gets worse, he was convicted about 16 years ago for a bunch of stuff. He and a woman tied a guy up, cut him up and poured bleach over him. Took any valuables he had and left the guy to suffer. He’s got a long history of violent crime and drug trafficking.

Yep I would stay to myself and I would make sure my guns are ready and loaded!

Don’t have any of those, 3 iron is by the front door now though. Can’t hit a ball with it to save my life, hopefully it works better for home defence.

Hopefully this round will be his final strike, and he's incarcerated for a lengthy period.

I work with a guy who I went to uni with. Shortly after graduation he got drunk and ran over and killed a kid then he did 4 years in prison. I figured he would never work again considering my line of work is remote and requires police clearances etc. Imagine my shock when I saw him at a company I was working at. To this day I’ve never told anyone he works with. Not sure if anyone knows about his past. I mean he did the crime and did the time I suppose.

This particular neighbour seems like a strange story. Two blokes random kill an old guy? Wonder why the details aren’t specified. Anyway, seems like you might be able to buy the neighbour house pretty cheap soon. 😁

Not in the budget, I couldn’t afford to buy in my neighborhood now. Prices have gotten wild since we built. That’s part of the annoyance honestly, it’s a rental house.
