Last week on the deck this one took on a life of its own. Thank god the deck is a weapon free zone :lol3:

We started throwing around covers that didn’t just do justice to the original, but surpassed it. 🎶

Not easy territory. You’re taking on something established/iconic and many are woeful.....but then there will come along this cracker!

Your nominations?  Make sure in your post you provide a  link to the original and the cover ;)

This is my all time favorite song. Imagine how good a cover would have to be to eclipse the original. I used to collect covers of White Rabbit on CD way back when. RIP the amazing frontman Warrel Dane.

Thank You Scientist is a seven piece progressive rock band I used to manage. Always loved their take on this obscure Eddie Murphy song. Incredible musicians with Zappa-style humor. Tom, the guitar player, might be the best guitar player I've ever seen aside from Guthrie Govan. If you're into ridiculous guitar work, check these guys out.

Nirvana : Where did you sleep last night. “In the pines”

original by Doc Walsh in 1926. Sorry Doc.

Plenty of other remakes to this song.

All Along the Watchtower and The Man who Sold the World are the best rock covers ever, far better than the originals to me. 👍

I completely agree with this. I'd go so far as to say that Jimi Hendrix's cover of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" is the best cover song of all time. Even Dylan had to change his arrangement of the song when he played it live thereafter.

One of my favourite covers is somewhat obscure (because it wasn't a hit single), but it has a great story. In 1971 The New York Rock Ensemble released a song called "Fields of Joy". It's so smooth and mellow in its arrangement!

Twenty years later, in 1991, Lenny Kravitz is at a Music Awards show and notices that Guns N'Roses are dominating the night (because they were huge then)! Across the room he notices that long-haired guy in the band and feels that he knows him from somewhere. Yes, Slash and Lenny went to Beverly Hills High School but didn't know each other well when they were students. Fast forward to doing a cover version of this song and Lenny has laid down the track completely himself (I'm talking bass, drums, acoustic guitar, rhythm guitars, keyboards, lead and backing vocals) but it is missing a lead guitar solo. In steps Slash to do it. They record the first take and Slash asks Lenny to do another. "No" came the reply as Lenny was happy with the first one. You can't beat perfection, as they say!

Another nomination for Motorhead. If you're playing the Devil, you need some growl.

Cheers!

No disparagement of Motor Head intended at all but I'm at a loss to see how any recording or performance has been an improvement on the original release of SFTD on Beggars Banquet.

Fair enough - a phenomenal song to be sure. It's one of my favorite songs to hear live - it sounds more 'raw'.

Cheers!

This one is a toss up. I am going to give it to the Communards.

I’m Losing You by the mighty Temptations. Are Rod and the Faces better? Not so sure after getting these clips but those English boys sure can do Motown proud. That’s right, Rod Stewart was a bona fide rock star. And Kenny Jones? Guy could hit the skins. Classic drum solo at 3:30.

@joeypots that’s another good one. May I throw Rare Earth's cover in the ring. My favorite.
