FOH Site Speed Poll

We are going through the recommendations and issues raised in our thread " How can we improve FOH in 2025". 

From a Discord channel to group reviews we are undertaking a full review. 

One issue that was raised by a few members was site speed. As you can imagine, this is a content and image heavy site. We are trying to get a handle on the potential issue of site speed. 

Let us know your experience by using the poll. It will allow us to get an idea of the significance of the issue.

Only lag is a few seconds during 24:24 when at max load. We all have to deal with it equally, so I don't consider it an issue. It's minimal enough I still have to use my restraint.

Love the efforts on continuous improvement though.

It's strange, I get some issues with loading but only with Safari. When I use Chrome I have no issues. So I don't guess that's necessarily an issue with the site but a browser issue...

I find the “daily smoke” thread to be notoriously slow, whenever on mac, iPad or phone (all using Safari though, I should add, that hadn’t occurred as a source of the problem 'til I saw the above note).

No problems on the PC, but Iphone and Ipad are acting much funkier than they have in the past. Slow photo load time on those devices, but not terrible, just requires a bit of patience.

I think the auto-compression of pics when uploaded to the site has been disabled somewhere on the way. When you check the daily smokes, pics are now full-size format like they come from the camera/phone. *

* or even inflated (just checked with one of my own pics)

100%. Posts are quick to load, it's just images that take a while for me on my 30-50Mb connection.

I'll use Chrome for a while and see if there's any change. With Safari a  photo heavy post is very slow to load.

PC is fine. Firefox on Linux. Quick on Android Phone and Fire Tablet too.

Hey folks, I have just tweaked the photo upload & display settings to see if we get any improvement for those having lag. It will only take effect on new photos, so we will have to see how we go over the coming days/weeks. FOH Daily Smoker thread is a great litmus test - so feel free to post away! 

For anyone who is experiencing significant site or post lag, would you mind either posting in this thread, or PMing to me, the details of the set-up it's occurring on: 

Device (make & model e.g. iPhone16)

Browser

VPN (if using one)

That really helps us nail down where the issue likely is. E.g. I have just compared Chrome and Safari on my desktop set-up (Mac + Chrome + Express VPN) and Chrome is definitely quicker when it comes to images. Safari wasn't horrible by any stretch, but it was noticeably slower.

Picture-heavy threads such as the 'Daily Smoking' or 'Cuban Purchase' ones can take some time to load, that's true. Personally, I use Adobe Photoshop to shrink my image uploads by 90% the size on average, whilst sacrificing about 10% of the quality.

Using ExpressVPN on all three Apple devices (all of which have had the slow load time for Daily Smoke thread).

Chrome loads very fast. I don't know why it doesn't occur to me to use it on websites that are not responding properly.

Yes - All Safari -- All with the most up to date OS and iOS.

Wow. Night and day faster loading images now. Images are loaded before I start scrolling. Previously was watching images loading sideways at a crawl. 👌

Safari seems to be part of the problem. 

If you're willing to, please give Chrome (or another alternative browser) a try.

It's the picture loads. Threads with a handful of pics are loading almost instantly. The daily thread is loading way quicker. I've been chopped down to 10Mbps broadband this last week - thanks EE/BT/OpenReach - so have noticed photos taking an age. The beautiful old box thread loaded instantly. So I braved the daily thread and it's way faster to load.

Now I'm waiting for my 36Mbps to come back and I may even try posting a photo again!
