Where the Most Money is Burned on Cigars

When it comes to buying cigars, U.S. adults are among the biggest spenders. Americans of age to buy tobacco spend around $36 per year on cigars, only topped by the Lebanese who spent almost $37 per capita last year on the vice. Other high rollers who like to spend big on expensive cigars are Qataris, Luxembourgers, Icelanders, the Swiss and the Brits - likely aided by the fact that these countries all have high price levels and/or high taxes on tobacco.

And Canada? I certainly do my bit! Then again, maybe I need to do more.

Hogglepoop. Where's China?

The US (330m) is the only country shown with a population over 70 million. Most of those countries barring UK (70) and Netherlands (18) are under 6 million.

Yeah they've done it per capita so China, India no chance.

Go the Lebanon though!

I always wonder/debate the interpretation of statistics. How many folks smoke versus a total population. Then the average price of cigars based on location.

Notwithstanding the population of the US - there are certainly plenty of NC cigars that sell for considerably less than most CCs...

Does that pass the sniff test?

Maybe for a month.

That’s what I was thinking in the before times.

Lets use the lower amount of 11.9 Billion

3.5% of Americans smoke cigars.

11,550,000 people

$11,926,000,000 / 11,555,000 = $1032.10 a year.

Does that pass the sniff test?

Sounds quite high.  I'd put the percent of Americans smoking cigars at .25%

Percentage of U.S. adults who currently smoked cigars† in 2021: 3.5% of all adults. 6.2% of adult men.

That may be the numbers the CDC goes with, but my "reading the room" numbers are lower than that.  I do not trust the CDC's stat's on much.

Do any other Americans feel the CDC's numbers are a bit high?

You might be right but everything I read is around the same %

Overall, 4.5% of the U.S. population reported smoking cigars within the last 30 days in 2018.

In 2019, 3.6% of U.S. adults (8.7 million) currently smoked cigars (Cornelius et al., 2020).

If this is true, I am quite impressed with how well we love cigars as a nation!

I don't believe that statistic distinguishes between premium handmade cigars and cheap machine rolled sticks like Swischer Sweets. That kind of cigar is still a big seller, and it's not all for rolling blunts (loose blunt wrappers are everywhere now anyway).

I’ve got a few golf buddies that qualify based on this phrasing, yet never seem to spend a cent on cigars…

Also the last 30 days of 2018 are basically a month-long holiday, so clearly everyone is smoking then…

I'm sure it doesn't. Premium cigars are but a minute fraction. But still it seems like 6% is a lot. That many urban wacky tabacky smokers?

Also, something tells me 99% of the female cigar smokers are not smoking premiums.

The weekend golf cigar smokers adds up, but I have heard that there is also a large fraction of folks in the US that smoke non-premium, machine rolled cigars. Gas station and drug-store cigars.

I have quite a few pals that aren't serious cigar smokers that smoke black and mild, swishers, backwoods and other such crappers on the regular.
