Beautiful oily wrapper. Would be hard to tell it's nearly 10 years old. Still smells very fresh. Lot of earth, leather and sweet tobacco unlit. Firm to the touch, but still pliant. V-cut.

Upon lighting, it has a dark almost black ash (which sticks around for the entire cigar), the first draws give off toasted cinnamon and nutmeg, with mild almond notes. Sweet and gentle toasted tobacco, with maybe a slight burnt bran/flaxseed aroma. Some herbal notes flit in and out.

Into the second third, slight citrus notes appear. Bitter orange peel and orange blossom water are apparent, especially on the exhale. A very pleasant tanginess begins to appear. Not quite spice, more of a brightness akin citrus leaf.

The final third combines nearly all the previous profiles, though an old, oiled leather note makes an appearance now. Toasted nutmeg returns quite strongly, the sweet tobacco notes remain strong and the citrus is sharper, flowing into more of a capsaicin note here and there. Excellent overall cigar. Forced to rate it, probably 92-93pts.

Choix are soft box pressed, so slightly square. OP cigar is round, and looks like a 50 or even 52 gauge.

That pepper and citrus screams PSD#4. Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck...

Very good point.

Although I have a partial box of 2017 CS that no longer show their box press, and looked very similar in wrapper texture and color. Some of those tasting notes also made me think of CS much more than D4.

Besides, why not be the ugly duckling 🐥

Initially went for a Montecristo Edmundo but if allowed I'm changing my mind, cause I kept thinking about that dark ash. I recall one robusto having that recently, and so I just had one more now, and so there is my updated guess...JL2

My first thought was JL1 which, of course, is not a Robusto.  I've never yet gotten any of my Jl1's or Jl2's to 10 years old - As I reread the third paragraph the "orange peel and orange blossom" got me so I'm going out on a limb and guessing a Regional -  La Flor de Cano Exclusivo Gran Bretana - Gran Cano

Do tell.

I definitely will on Wednesday! Enjoying all the guesses. I'm also looking forward to smoking another of the same cigar in a week or so to see if I come away with the same/similar notes when I'm not quite so focused on it being for a review 😀

Partagas D4!

Lots of interesting flavors. I'll be trying another from the same code later this month and will post another review. Cheers!
