Popular Post El Presidente Posted January 22, 2023 Popular Post Posted January 22, 2023 We had a good first up outing on the new boat Saturday. Great fun and while we didn't do too much fishing we picked up a very nice sweetlip. I need to upgrade a couple of reels and am looking at 3500-4000 spinning reels capable of 15-20 lb braid & 30 lb mono. Target species for these are Threadfin Salmon, Spotty/Spanish Mackeral, Longtail tuna, Mangrove Jack. None of these are over 5 kg/11.5 lb but they run like trains. Fly reels I know. Spinning reels not so much. For the fishermen out there. What are you using spin reel wise? Would you buy it again? If not, what would you buy instead? On behalf of the crew of the Unsinkable II ........gracias 6
KCCubano Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 I have a lot of spinning gear. Love my Daiwa Tatula spinning reel. Very light weight and strong. Also have Shimano Stella's. Cant go wrong with either one. 1
Hammer Smokin' Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 I'm assuming 100% use in salt water prez?

Hammer Smokin' Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 yah, that'll cost you. Obviously the Stella is the premiere reel for the size you are referring to, and it will handle the salt water. Shimano and Daiwa both make cheaper, but still great quality reels, but aren't suitable for salt water. We have taken 35lbs King Salmon on Shimano Stradic 4000 spinning reels. But I wouldn't trust them in the salt. In further reading on the Shimano website they claim the Ci4 material can handle saltwater. That would include Stradic Ci4 4000's, same we use for salmon. Maybe look for used Stella's...as they truly are rock solid. Love the sound of a spinning reel's drag peeling out on a big fish. 1
Ford2112 Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 Prez if you maintain your gear well for the money the Daiwa BG are overbullt and killer reels . If available, you can't go wrong. I'm a Daiwa guy. I fish my Saltist and BG reels hard. Shimano stradics are solid as well. Unless you are after line burner fish these should serve your needs. 1
El Hoze Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 I use mostly Shimano and fish braid. Stellas are nice, I have a few, but like anything else at some point the incremental dollar isn’t worth it. The sweet spot is probably the guys just beneath the Stella (Excense, Twin Power, Sustain). I fish alot of Sustains they are great. 1
Hammer Smokin' Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 I have two Sustains and agree they are a solid reel. They are also Ci4 material. I just can't imagine trusting that material for strong saltwater fish. I think the Twin Power reel is more solid than any of the Ci4 material reels (of course, the Twinpower is heavier as a result). Haven't tried the Daiwa Saltist spinning reel...but their level winds have done well pulling copper for us. 1
TroutBum Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 No help in the spinning department, fly I would’ve been of some use
westg Posted January 23, 2023 Posted January 23, 2023 Rob Shimano Stella 5000....you wont regret it. Beautiful piece of fishing equipment. You could probably scale down a model or two for smaller stuff under 5kg Fun times ahead..🌴😎🎣🐟 1

jasutherland92 Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 Been a Shimano guy all my life...a few Daiwas that I enjoyed. I have probably 15 Stradics from 25 yrs old to brand new...I love them. If you want to splurge, get the Stella, but the Stradic to me is close for a 1/3 of the price. 1
