The VW bus I drove to Colorado in 1979 looked like the one below.  Anyone that's driven one in the mountains would have no affection for such a vehicle.  Underpowered, terrible handling, no heat.  Don't let the nostalgia get you on this one...they really do suck.

1979 VW Bus- ORIGINAL PAINT SURVIVOR, MUSEUM QUALITY- LIKE NEW!

Family friends bought a westfalia for camping in Europe in the mid-70’s. Family of five. With the mid kitchenette. You wanna talk misery. And I only had to get in that precursor to a minivan periodically for carpool. I can’t imagine touring Europe and camping in it.
I grew up in a house on a hill road in front had an incline. That vw always struggled.

20 people in there?  No chance you get that to 100KPH unless you drop it out of a cargo plane without a parachute. 🤣

I used to love listening to my dad's mechanics complain in German about the Westfalia water cooling system.  Something like 22 feet of water hoses from the front radiator to the rear engine and then back to the front again, all running underneath the vehicle.  They solved the heater problem that the air cooled engines had; at least as long as those hoses held up.
