I say why not? Great way to sell cigar accessories. They can sell a humidor that automatically reads the smart chip and uploads to a virtual humidor for online tracking of your stash. Every time you remove or re-stock, it amends your inventory list. And you never need to remember what the box code is at it is already on the smart chip.

I can imagine the future:  Cigar prices skyrocket due to chip shortages.

If all they are for is general information about the cigar, manufacture date, and box code - gimmick; a QR code could provide the same info and be a lot cheaper to produce. 

If the chip was a way of proving authenticity, it might have some value (depending on when and how the chips are programmed) but if they're just programmed at the label manufacturer and stored at the factory, they could just be stolen and used on fakes. 

I like @Fuzz's idea for inventory control (kind of an Amazon store of sorts built into your humidor) but I'm not sure there are enough OCD inventory freaks to create a market for that.... outside of this forum 😁
