LordAnubis Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 How often does anyone find a distinct Clove flavour in a cigar? Im talking full on indonesian clove cigarette type flavour. As if you just chewed on a full full clove in your Biryani. Ive had it a few times in the past. The first was a long time ago in a trinidad reyes. but most recently believe it or not in a Monte 520. The first thirds was full on cloves and more cloves. Anyone taste this every now and then in cigars? or often even? I normally taste a spice more towards cinnamon in the typically ssavoury cigars like RyJ and Partagas, but not often cloves.
JohnS Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 Looking over my Daily Smoking Blogs for 2021 and 2020 I can tell you that I get cloved spice in a cigar rarely. There were no instances thus far in 2021. In 2020 I got it most often in a few Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.2s, a few Hoyo de Monterrey Double Coronas, a couple of Diplomaticos No.2s, a Hoyo de Monterrey Rio de Seco, a Punch Punch, a Punch Short de Punch and a hint of it in a prototype 2020 Version Two Nudies N3. Most of the time I only got hints of this particular flavour. 2
Habana Mike Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 Smoking a 520 at the moment. Perhaps a touch of clove, could be the power of suggestion though. I can recall faint clove from other cigars though never an in your face clove note. Do you enjoy it? 2
Bijan Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 I find clove spice and/or baking spice in a lot of cigars. Really a judgment as to which is which. Cigars that I find have that often are Hoyo de Monterrey le Hoyo du Depute and du Maire. Edit: As to cinnamon I get that in Monte 2 and 5. Edit 2: Again not sure how often it's in your face clove, vs clove flavour as part of a spice mix. Edit 3: In terms of spice, I tend to distinguish Spice, Baking Spice, Clove, Cinnamon, and sometimes Nutmeg (with cayenne and pepper as separate flavours too). The first two can also have varying amount of clove in them, more so the baking spice. 2
LordAnubis Posted May 31, 2021 Author Posted May 31, 2021 I don't necessarily hate clove, but cant say i prefer a hit of clove over an in your face coffee or cream/bread flavour. But yeah its interesting most likely my pallate on the day or something but who knows. i cant say i know what baking spice is so wouldnt be able to tell what the difference between that and clove is.

Just a typical mix of spices used for baking sweets, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, all spice, etc. I find often it's a jumble. Spice on the other hand I think of as the same type of mix but for more savoury food. Edit: Generally in Europe these spices (cinnamon, etc.) stopped being used in savoury foods, and became associated with baking sweets. 2

I'm currently smoking a Connie B and picking up lots of nutmeg, some clove, and maybe like a cardamom type aftertaste. 2

CaptainQuintero Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 Not often but thinking back, it's been Trinidad that has thrown it up occasionally. In fact Trinidad seems to put out some really interesting wildcard herb/spices more than any other Marca for me. I distinctly remember jasmine tea and rosemary pretty often with Reyes for example

But to me it's a flavour discriptor that blurs between a few different things. Clove as mentioned, Wrigglys 'Juicyfruit' gum, but also Jamaican allspice which has a distinct sort of coca-cola flavour to it. It's really noticible that when Punch isn't 'on', you get none of this, and mostly just tannic pencil shavings
BrightonCorgi Posted May 31, 2021 Posted May 31, 2021 Fonseca No. 1 is full spices and perfume scents.
