I love H. Upmann Lline but I have never tried a Magnum 54s yet?

The H. Upmanns I love are the Connie 1, Connie A, Connie B, Magnum 50, No. 2, PC, Monarchs, Sir Winstons.  My favorite were the discounted Super Coronas but not a fan of the Magnum 46s though.

How do they compare to the rest of the H. Upmann line.

I am sort of in a dilemma to buy a box of the Magnum 54s or a box of the recent Monte #2s that everyone is raving about.

TIA

Mag 54s are unique to the lineup IMO. I feel like the Mag 54 is more like the No. 2 crossed with a Mag 46. I am a huge fan of Connie 1, A and SW but I've yet to be drawn in by the Mag 54. I find them a little undefined, muddled at times with no evolution and less than ideal construction and consistency. I really am not sure what the idea was with the blend. Seems like they just threw some various HU leaf together for to make a 54 RG.

Luckily, they are available in 10s, so you can sample cheaply enough. And I'm sure Rob will put up a 6er before too long.

I'm not a fan of the 54 sizing...maybe it's just me, but they always seem to smoke in odd ways. Jawbreaker gauge too.

Personally I keep rotating boxes of 46/Connie 1/Connie A, with Sir Winnies being my every once in a while smoke. I have no issue fading the rest of the marca most of the time.

I picked up a 6-pack last year and have had a few of them. While HU is probably my favorite line by far, I was unimpressed by the Mag 54s. The ring gauge is just too big for my preference.

Connoisseur #1 is perfect size for me at 48 ring X 5 in.

54 is definitely a jawbreaker.

3 down so far...meh at best.

I prefer the Conny 1 (substantially)

I guess I will pass on these and get a current box of Monte #2s that everyone is raving about.

I would most definitely choose Monte 2 over Mag 54 today. In fact, I just did order a box of Monte 2 and I suppose I could have ordered Mag 54 if I wanted to.

Would agree with TS on this.  HU is a top Marca for me however I've never had much luck with the 54.  They've run hot, burned wonky and seemed one dimensional in flavor for me.  Also not a huge fan of the massive RG.

I would like to say I 'love' the Hoyo Le Hoyo De San Juan cigars.

same 54 RG but I bought a 6 pack from the last time Prez got the aged PCC ones (were they 2016 maybe?) earlier in 2020...they are fantastic! I wish I had bought a full box of them!

Not much love for the HU 54 it seems.  I didn't really care for them originally because I thought they were too light-bodied. Then I grew to really enjoy them when I hanker for a morning cigar (e.g. Before a round of golf because I don't smoke on the course). For me they offer ample complexity and refinement but I only care for them in the morning....so I don think smoke many because I'm not a morning cigar guy.

I guess I'm the odd man out here... Granted, I've not regularly smoked the other HU vitolas as other more experienced people here, but the box of Mag 54s I'm currently working through have been a surprise favorite since I broke it open a few months ago. Not the absolute best I've had, but definitely no regrets.

Not my favorite ring gauge either, and after smoking a couple that were about a year old, I set the rest aside. At 2 years they are vastly superior IMO. I've actually fought almost every Monte 2 I've ever tried they taste somewhere between wet ashtray and swamp mud. I'm at like 0/5 at this point I think. So I've set those aside too and will revisit at the 3-4 year point.

Needs a year or two in my opinion to show it's potential. Didn't like them at first, started leaving them aside. After 18months, it was totally different experience for me. Since then, I have them always in my humi.

They’re fine.  I smoke em when I golf.  The flavors are definitely muddled.  Size kind of blows.

If I made cigars, this is not what I'd ever want to hear about mine!

Not to distract too much from the discussion at hand, but dang Vigia are so good they make me not even think about the 54 rg......and Im speaking from a large sample size ...one of my fav!!

I've yet to have a great one, and I gathered there's been some inconsistency with them. I haven't had one in a while, so maybe 19-20 have been better. I will say I'd rather have a Vigia than a Mag 54 though.

Interesting discussion.   I had my first Mag 54 last night and really enjoyed it.  Am a big fan of HU in general.  Will be interesting to see how the box evolves.

For the right quality cigar, I quickly forget about the RG.

I've been smoking through a box of Hoyo Grand Epicure. That's a 54 RG, if not maybe 55? I don't even notice the obese RG when smoking....cause they are so damn good.

but when I smoke a semi good to not so good high RG, I immediately "hate" the increased size...kind of like the pile on effect.

Yeah 55, it' a Montesco 55x130 same as RyJ Wide Churchill (which I think was the first cigar in that size) and many many other EL/RE since with the most recent being the 2019 Monte Supremos.

I think I have four left in my box of ten. One of the best boxes of cigars I've owned (each cigar has consistently been perfect!)

What's the flavour like, standard Hoyo (Epicure No. 1, Epicure No. 2), or something different?

they have all been cream bombs, like you would expect from a Hoyo, but have a sweeter taste than I'm used to, maybe vanilla? Now I fully admit I'm terrible at cigar descriptions, and one of the main reasons I don't do them (saying good, really good, not so good, doesn't go far in cigar reviews).

But with that said the sweet creamy, almost honey like taste is like a treat. I usually put a couple months between each time I smoke one, just long enough to forget how much I enjoyed the last. That way when I spark one up I get to "re-remember" how good they are. The first three or four were like their own experience. Now that I'm over half box in, I sorta expect it, and it becomes less of a surprise. But even with expectations, they still are a treat. I know the likelihood of getting more in the future is rare, so I'll just enjoy these last four the best I can :)

The last one I smoked was absolutely transcendent. I think it probably ranked as the 2nd best cigar I've ever had; the complexity and evolution was just amazing. It went from white chocolate to grilled pork and then soy sauce.
