  1. 1. The word shivviness (adj.) means...

    • The uncomfortable feeling of wearing new undergarments.
    • The feeling of witnessing or being the target of terse, sharp, hurtful remarks.
    • The unsettling tension in appearance and demeanour of two pirates meeting again after having not seen each other for quite some time.
    • The countenance of a person who has just been found wanting and is on the precipice of blaming someone else for their shortcomings.

Some slight tweaks to the comp for 2020...

Every week we're going to have a poll about the definition of a forgotten or obscure word. From the four options pick the definition you believe to be the correct one. Voters who pick the correct definition go into the draw for an El Pres Sampler!!   (Drawn Tuesday morning, Brisbane time. Please note: Polls don't show on Tapatalk, but you can participate via a web version of the site)

NO GOOGLING OR DICTIONARY USE! We're using the honour system. It's just a bit of fun. If you know, you know. If you don't, have a stab in the dark or an educated guess (if you prefer that term). ;)

You may elaborate about your choice in the topic thread below if you wish but no posting of any official definitions, etc., that will give away the game for others.

Now you know the drill, vote away!  Good luck and may this comp prove to be a fun palaestra that turns us all into better word-grubbers, if you know what I mean...

The former Dread Pirate Roberts could not shake the shivviness he felt beneath his britches, for the new underwear Buttercup had given him did not sit right. "Bamboo breathes better than cotton! And after 3 months at sea, don't you dare bring those cotton underwear home for washing!!" she yelled at him on his last trip home. Roberts recalled the shivviness from all the hurtful barbs thrown at him by Buttercup; but they did not nearly eclipse the shivviness he was about to feel. For the Former Former Dread Pirate Roberts was journeying to see him today. All could the see the shivviness on Roberts' face as he waited on the dock, for he knew his former captain would not be happy he gave up the title given to him after only such a short time.

I figured the root word being shiv reminds me of a knife, so I went with option 2.

Make sure you never confuse the term "shiv" (n) with "shank" (v).  It'll give you away on the cell block.  You shank your b$*tch with your shiv.

A little inside advice.  ?

My rule for this really should be, always vote for the one that sounds most absurd...

An absolutely classic movie! Regardless of the story itself, which I love but admit is rather silly & fairy tale-ish, I still think it is one of the best movies ever made. One of those rare instances in movies when they get everything right. Great camera work and settings, perfect casting and direction, great acting, great story and humour. I should get around to reading the book by William Goldman at some point. I must be a romantic at heart.

Nope!

Couldn't have been more wrong - would have been my last of 4 guesses.  I've never had the shivviness experience, can't relate at all.  I love these contests but man do I suck at them.

Voted then googled. Once again, my reasoning behind defining the unknown is highly questionable.

I applied some arcane knowledge and, with great confidence, swung and missed.

No. 1 it was! Well done to those who got it right. :clap:But even more kudos and deep respect to those intrepid characters who opted for the "pirate" decoy. :cigar:

The random draw winner is @FatPete!!

Bowled over-thanks guys. Coincidentally I was experiencing shivviness today on the way to the shops ( only for basic essentials of course)
