It's a union so that doesn't surprise me in the least.

Exactly.

The scary thing is that, if money were no object, just how easy it would be to rack up a $60K bill on 24:24.

I reckon I could do that in just a week or two given the opportunity!

Writing it off as a work expense however, well that's a different thing.

I'd just pre-type emails -

Hi Di, 4 boxes of everything on offer today please.

- set them to auto-send at 8:28am (GMT+8) between Tuesday to Thursday

I am a lawyer and play a lot of golf with clients and am a cigar club member. My accountant is taking the expense under advisement.

I am writing off about $1500 this year. They make nice gifts to clients and referral sources.

I'm retired from the business world and a $60k cigar bill is not entirely out of line depending on how the items were expensed out?  This amounts to a bit more than a thousand dollars per week being disposed although I admit not reading the article.

Smoking 200-300$ Ashton's is just insane. Clearly a bunch of entitled dickheads picking out the most expensive cigars in the shop just because they can. Just another example of how power is abused when it's highly centralized and unchallenged.

I also write off $10K'ish per year in "customer incentives", but we cannot purchase for gifting tobacco or booze.

In theory if included in a meal (say adding cigars to smoke after meal), I could get it expensed, as it would be under meals and entertainment.

But we have specific rules about gifts.

Damn Concur eh?! (I'm sure we are all using Concur)

That they spent the money is one thing, but the cigars themselves come in at under $12 a pop, which is pretty average for the sizes, and pretty good given the consistency of quality.

Ah the way I read it was $300 per cigar. That’s still an insane amount of cigars to smoke!

60k is a lot of money to spend for one mans stash of sticks, however this was not for one man. It's not like he was buying aged davidoffs. This is just a normal business practice to show respect to potential new contacts for your organization and to reward the ones that are already on board. Every business does it. Season tickets for crap seats at the Colts will run you 10k a seat. Some companies purchase sections. As big as the union is, this is nothing. I work for a merit shop and our 2 day summit is coming up. We spent hundreds of thousands for this. Heck I wouldnt be surprised if the motivational speaker is making 60k for his few hours of work that week. I would rather my company give us cigars than some dessert tower. Articles like this make me wonder who is writing this garbage. Freshman in college that dont know a thing about how the world works?

You might be shocked if you saw the expense accounts of some management that is written into their employment contract?

Lol at concur. I know our firm uses it but I never see it.

60k in cigars is a little bit excessive at even retail prices. That's 5,000 cigars at $12 each. However, this was over a longer period of time was it not? It doesn't specify whether they were consumed over the course of business dealings post dinner or on the golf course. I'm sure many boxes were outright gifted and some kept. I don't know. I am unaware of any regulatory agency or oversight committee for the UAW, but in my field, the SEC would wreck you for surpassing entertainment caps.

In the grand scheme of things, the minor misuse of this paltry sum is miniscule versus the lack of value the UAW provides anymore for any workers on the total amount they bilk out of their hourly pay.
