It’s a worldwide epidemic.

And things haven’t even gotten bad yet for the developed world. With climate change and the coming famine and Water Wars and increased immigration from low-lying countries and war-torn regions, and the income inequality that increases with these regimes... wait til the chickens come to roost.

I'd settle for just being decent human beings......but it turns out that it's beyond most

Move to Cuba or Venezuela. Everyone’s equal...

problem with Cuba might be global warming though. It will probably be totally under water in a couple years...

There has to be something in between though. I don't understand why the answer to bad ideas has become even worse ideas. Every modern governmental system is perfect on paper. The problem is human beings. The problem is always human beings.

Struggle to agree with this.   In years past, parties would stand for something, and people would vote for it.  Under that model, yes, people deserved the mess they chose to elect.

In the modern era,   Rasputin like characters, like Dominic Cummings have used the Edward Bernays model. i.e sell people a lie.  create fake NHS leaflets, use social media to profile people without their knowledge, Cambridge Analytica etc etc.      I will respectfully disagree, I think these people are repulsive.   nobody deserves them

I think this paragraph from BBC summarises everything up quite well -

"In one of the first seats to declare, the Conservatives took Blyth Valley, the first time the former mining area, which voted Leave in the EU referendum, will have a Conservative MP."

The democratic process has unfortunately proved to be flawed by being manipulated. You get the government that works the system best, uses the media, lies best and has the biggest balls. The truth has become irrelevant, the vote and the win are all that matter.

All parties now do it, in the UK the Tories are much better at it than the others.

This election brings to mind one of my favorite H.L. Mencken quotes: "Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard."

But we are seeing the same playbook and manipulation of media/false propaganda/lies/fear mongering/xenophobia.

Other than xenophobia, I struggle to think of any political party (democratic or otherwise) in the world that has a manifesto that doesn't include any of the above. The proliferation of social media has made the spread of FAKE NEWS even harder to control. Unfortunately a majority of people in the world do not do the proper fact-checking before spreading sensationalist news forward.

The problem with democracy in this case is that you're voting between two groups of arse holes, the best you can do is try and work out which is the lesser of two arse holes based on the guff they spew out.

A concise and accurate summation. Thank you Sir!

13 more seats for the SNP makes that a strong possibility.
The first reactions from the Tories indicate that they will vehemently oppose a second Independence referendum. Not good at all.

My rather simplistic of global politics is that ever increasing income inequality has created the craziness we are currently seeing. The rich have so much money that they don’t know what to do with it. Private equity, family offices, etc. are throwing money at even marginal investment opportunities. On the other hand we have a deluge of economic migrants and people struggling to make ends meet. Even in so called communist China the ranks of the super rich continue to grow in leaps and bounds.

Brexit was caused by the have nots mistakenly blaming the EU for their woes and ironically voting in the same politicians who caused the income inequality that led them to vote for Brexit in the first place.

Saw the statement by Nicola Sturgeon today and she intends to legally fight for the Scottish parliament's right to hold a second Indepence referendum. So, it might be interesting ...

How is this thread gone this far when the same thread that is US-centric is stopped?

I think the rule is US politics are taboo but all other politics are ok...if I'm not mistaken.
