For anyone who is interested, apparently, some boxes have landed in Germany.  They went for a whopping 1400 Euros for a box of 20.  I am assuming, or at least hoping, that this exorbitant price is due to the novelty being the first to own these.  But the boxes that were available sold very quickly, so who knows.  I was figuring on paying around $1000 a box, which I know many people would balk at, but at 1400 Euros, I may only buy 1 box.?

FWIW, they do look beautiful.

Germany has fixed pricing - no such thing as “marking up for rarity” at any official dealer.

That price is nuts.

Since Talisman & Behike are about that price and sell, this is definitely not an exorbitant price--particularly since these will likely be double that price within 18 mos. I'd almost have to say this is a steal at that price.

Quick conversion using XE as of Friday 21st of December, 2018...

€1400 Euro = USD $1600, AUD $2260, GBP £1260 (approx). Alternatively, it equates to €70 EURO, $USD80, $AUD113, £63 GBP a stick, before taxes.

Wow. 1400Euros = $2162CAD.  That's $108CAD/stick.  A Talisman before sales tax in Toronto is $143CAD.  Not ideal, but not horrible I guess for some. They'd be a hard NO for my budget though. I'd rather just buy up older CoRo's or lay down recent ones to age.

Seems like anything and everything Cohiba sells. They could charge whatever they wanted. If we don't buy it, the Chinese will. Hell, the Majestuosos are over $10k now

Were they?  I don’t remember them being that high.  I’ve seen boxes more recently for around that price.

That’s what I paid, and if I’m not mistaken they were offered at a similar price on one 24:24 listing (as clearance) this summer.

I picked up a box yesterday for 150 CAD a stick. Not bad compared to the behike and talisman prices here

The Sir Winston 2011 Reserva Cosecha was around $1350 for a box of 15.  This doesn’t sound too far off for a box of 20. 

Reserva versus Gran Reserva is a pretty big difference...

I just paid $300 for a Montecristo No. 2 Gran Reserva 2005 so $80/stick at $1600/box USD doesn't seem too bad.

I read your write-up on the best smokes of 2018, which was a great post, BTW. I am now looking forward to the next time I’m in Dubai to a much higher degree.

Thank you! Dubai was an excellent experience. Their LCDH was a bit overpriced as with everything in Dubai, but boy was their selection out of this world. Enjoy it!

Excellent selection indeed. I always stop by for a smoke, if it isn't too insanely hot. Airport duty free usually has a pretty decent selection as well.

What's so special about these ranges? Is it only the age of the tobacco? I guess the blends are the same.

Oh and the presentation/packaging of course.

There's a whole lot that goes into these releases.

• Prime tobacco is set aside, aged and then rolled.  For "Reserva" releases the tobacco is aged 3 years. "Gran Reserva" is five years.
• Limited #'s released of course. 5000 boxes of 20 cigars in this case.
• Special packaging and special pricing. If this was a GR it'd cost more too.

I wouldn't consider these as "must haves" but for many, they are.  To each their own.  The market for Habanos these days is all about the double banders and special releases.  Which is good if you're only interested in regular production stock.  If you're able to get a hold of one at a price you're OK with, it might be worth exploring.  Otherwise, get a box of CoRo's and lay them down for several years. 

IMO. I'm not a huge fan of aging the leaves and then rolling them into cigars vs aging full boxes of cigars.  The aged box has the advantage in that the oils in all the layers of tobacco (filler, binder, wrapper) "meld" over time and contribute greatly to the flavour and body of the cigar.  Aging the leaves separately probably mellows out the tobacco, especially if they are left to sit in their pilons that whole time.  You probably end up with a smoother cigar upon release but I'm not sure how much aging potential is left.  YMMV from various releases. I've found the handful of CGR's I got my hands on outperform my 8 year old Siglo VI's (at the time of CGR release). But my 5YO Lusitanias outsmoked the PGR's.  It's all subjective really, but it makes for interesting banter.

Given that year to year boxes are different from Cuba. Even boxes from the same year can vary. Selecting your boxes from look smell feel can make a big difference. Which is the selling point on FOH.

I've some nicely aged singles and a few boxes. But I don't have the inclination to pay the premium to do the comparison with these special reserva releases. So I'll leave that to you guys ?

in actual fact, pricing's been kept pretty stable. Stable in relation to the corresponding regprod brethren, that is.
