ayepatz Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 I was just now going through my cigar inventory spreadsheet (yes, I am that nerd) and I’ve realised that I don’t actually possess a full box of anything. Evidently, I just can’t leave them be. Chances of flipping a box or two? Nil. Am I alone in this, or are there others out there like me? 2 1
Derboesekoenig Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 That's why I've filled the OLH on here! Haha guaranteed full boxes....until I get em home. I enjoy cigars...I haven't sold any and don't plan on it. I'm not a big fan of the infamous "flippers". 1
TBird55 Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 As long as I don't smoke one out of a box, I have no trouble staying out of it. Once I get into a box, is when I have problems staying out. Haven't flipped a box, given some away, but never sold any. 3
Hammer Smokin' Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 i don't know how many hundreds of cigars I've bought in the last few years, but I've only ever purchased one "full box" (and it was 2, PD4's). otherwise, I enjoy too many different cigars to buy boxes. I can't afford it. 3 here, 5 there, 10/20 or so if PC's. i truly envy those who own dozens of 'boxes' of different types/brands/marca's/etc.
gweilgi Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 I don't flip boxes, ever. The only full boxes are instances where I have bought two (or more). If I do not smoke one straight out of the box, how can I have a baseline?
Colt45 Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 I've never bought a cigar with any intention other than smoking them. 4
Raskol Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 Still new to cigars. Currently using excel to keep track. Different coolers for singles, opened boxes & long term storage. End of the day when there is not enough storage game of tetris will start. Been through that ? Don't flip & don't think will do that. 1

kalibratecuba Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 I don't flip, but I assume selling singles or 5-packs would give the greater profit. Would love to know the motivations for reselling CC. What's that person's angle? Money? Ever try to smoke a greenback? Taste like a Ghurka. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk 1 1
Bagman Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 I've sold a few boxes. I hate when I do it. I just have too much. Obsessive buying leads to unfortunate selling. Hopefully I got a better handle on what I can truly smoke in a year 1
Hammer Smokin' Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 as someone who buys 3 packs, 5 packs, mixer packs, etc. I THANK EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU who offers up these from your purchased boxes. If you didn't, folks like me would be stuck paying B&M prices, OR being forced into buy a box. To be honest, even the Esplandito, my absolutely favourite cigar, I wouldn't buy a box of..... But when Prez offers up 5 packs, or other members (even 3 packs), I jump all over them! 4
Lucass111 Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 Never sold a box and don't think I ever could. It would hurt too bad lol. I should start buying more mix packs though....my wallet is getting thin.

Personally, on occasion I will buy a box of 25 even if I don’t want the whole box. Or maybe better put, I don’t “need” the whole box. Maybe I only want 10-15 to try them out. Sometimes I’ll break the box up and recoup some of my investment. If there’s any profit, most times all it will cover is the fuel I burn on the way to the post office. If every CC’s came in boxes of 10 I would be a happy man. I also live in Canada where cigars are heavily taxed and sometime I can’t afford to buy an entire box. 3
Hammer Smokin' Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 I agree with the 10 box sentiment. but at the same time, I don't mind taking your extras I enjoyed one of the Espy's I bought off you during our trouncing of Johnny Manziel and Montreal two weeks ago (haven't had a number of great ticat games this year to break out the good cigars). What an amazing evening to enjoy my favourite cigar! The Siglo IV's I've had so far (2 of them) were also really nice! Thanks again (and the Stamps still suck ) 1
dicko Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 I always smoke one (or several of the first tastes nice) fresh off the truck so I'm with yiu brother.Sent from my SM-G965F using Tapatalk 1
LordAnubis Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 You always buy a 5er ASWELL as a box. Smoke the 5er in due time. Let the box rest. But yeah I’ve not bought anything with the intention to sell later. I always buy stuff to keep. But then tastes change and I get rid of something if I’m not going to smoke it. Hammer Smokin' Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 I can't imagine trying to explain that logic to the wife. she doesn't understand the need for a bigger humidor...after all, my desktop holds 200 cigars, "You can't need more cigars than that?!"
kalibratecuba Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 Okay, direct me to the man with the 5-packs of Espys for sale. My one white whale! After that I can provide insight into the buying side of flipping. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk 1
Akela3rd Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 I identify with most of what had been said above. I buy to smoke, not sell; I have a few unopened boxes, but only because they haven't been opened (if that makes sense); it's an investment I'll never recoup; my wife thinks I have 'enough'; I'll happily give cigars to friends but shudder if they ask to buy a few off me. I even bought a box of Monte 5 once with the intention of splitting it 50/50 with someone at work, but couldn't go through with it and just gave him some of them and kept the majority. Popular Post Fuzz Posted August 18, 2018 Popular Post Posted August 18, 2018 Every cigar I have ever bought has been for investment... an investment for future good times. 11 1
Notsocleaver Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 Whenever I can, I buy two boxes at a time. Its the only way I can 'age' anything. Multi-box deals are some of the best prices you will find here or anywhere else, flip a box and you can get a good deal for them and an even better one for yourself. I put together samplers for people from time to time, it isn't too hard to find a deal that makes everyone feel like they came out ahead. But I'm not looking at it as an income stream, just a way to keep my cigar collection a little more liquid in a sense. Sell a few 5ers to people wanting some samplers, use it to buy a bonus box of something I want to age, sell aged 5ers to someone wanting to try an aged cigar. Rinse, repeat.
IanMcLean68 Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 I definitely don't see my cigars as an investment, just a luxury I enjoy. I do like to do swaps and share with FOH friends - thats a great way for everyone to try something new or to try aged stock, or assess cigars in a fun way as a group. I am vigilant with my boxes (some may say anal). With only a few exceptions, they don't get opened unless 3 or 5 years of age, depending on cigar and quality. Monte usually 3 yr, 5 for most everything else. I find I more enjoy the evolution of a box more from this age onwards. I have things pretty much under control with about 1/3 of my boxes in current rotation.
SigmundChurchill Posted August 18, 2018 Posted August 18, 2018 The only time I ever sell cigars is when I am not fond of them, so by definition, I sell no full boxes. I dont look at cigars as an investment.
