In most sports, you get at least a decent kerfuffle going on in the background around rule changes and supposed ways to improve the game. In MLB, I'm constantly hearing about ways to speed up play, and this year there have also been rumblings around restrictions to the shift... In our NRL here in Aus, we have basically been going from debacle to debacle, week to week, with the top-tier management constantly meddling in areas they should stay the hell out of, and the Bunker (our video review system) making monumentally complex cock-ups out of seemingly simple situations... It's a war between fans and the game's management. And it's a desperate shame. The game's management is exuding unrivaled incompetencies, in my opinion; almost every week, they seem to stumble to a new low. To quote Blackadder: "A war hasn't been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, high chief of all the Vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside."

For my two bob's worth, MLB-wise, I say leave the shift as is--the defence should be able to use stats to set-up their defence as they see fit. Hitters need to adjust. In the NRL, I like the idea of on-field officials having the major onus put upon them, even adding more in-goal officials, but keep it on the field, reduce the number of video interruptions to a minimum--perhaps boil that down to a coach's challenge system.

Anyhow, that rant aside, I'm wondering, if you had the power, what rules/gameplay/tech would you change/introduce to your game/s?

NFL. No punts! You get four downs to get 10 yards. NFL ratings would go through the roof and we’d see triple digit scores every weekend!

I’m so with you on this! Tried to watch the games of the last World Cup and ended up turning off the TV every other game! It’s a disgrace, these spoilt and overpaid millionaire a$&holes

NRL - Fines for poor refereeing by the Bunker (you've got video replay from multiple angles, how can you screw up?!). Get rid of the scrum. I mean, has there ever been a contested scrum since the 90's? Either have a proper scrum or get rid of it.

Agree. I want the scrum to stay, as it's a unique attacking opportunity for the backs. But make them proper scrums--forwards in their proper positions, a decent push, and a (reasonably) straight feed. If they can't make that happen, then just make it a handover. Essentially, that's what's happening now.

I always think of the hard working dads that take their kids to the games or pay out of their ass for Pay-TV subscriptions to watch soccer. No Ronaldo or Neymar would have a flippin cent in their pocket without average-joe buying tickets, subscriptions or merchandise! And every weekend again there are these tossers that have never learned to man up and play a proper, fair game of football

Actually just read that back home in Germany it’ll cost you 860€/1000US$ now to watch all Bundesliga matches 2018/19 and all European cup games! To watch you need three different subscriptions with Sky, DAZN and Eurosport! And for all the money you’ll get diving and crying players (picture Neymar) and regularly 0:0 draws after 90 mins.!

Screw that, I’d rather buy a few more boxes of cigars for that money!

Apart from World Cup and the odd Champions League game I gave up on all the league stuff years ago, they don’t deserve my time or money for this mess!

Would Neymar ever play?

My beefs tend more towards management than the games themselves, but...

Baseball: Outlaw the bench clearing "brawl." You have a beef with someone, you can fight them (and take your fine/ suspension), but no more of these tired scenes of 60 guys all pouring out of dugouts and bullpens to push each other and shout. Technically its already against the rules but take a page from the nba and start punishing players who leave the dugout, bullpen and their defensive positions.

How about we start letting pitchers go inside again and stop the warnings and ejection crap? So long as you get a guy below the shoulder its fine. Getting hit was part of the game as was pitching inside. Dudes sit on top of the plate now.

Baseball:

1) Ban artificial surfaces of any kind.

2) Eliminate penalties for stealing signs, doctoring the ball, loading the bat with pine tar, and throwing at hitters (below the shoulder).

3) Ban shin and elbow armor unless medically necessary.

Soccer - I played through high school and college. Then played for pure fun well into my 40s. Love almost everything about the game. But at the highest level the offside rule is a joke. It's nearly impossible to properly judge for the sidelines ref - it's called wrong as often as it's called right. But worst of all - it compresses that game to about 1/3 of the field  for 20 players to occupy and results in really poor offense and the ever boring 0-0 draws.  Eliminate offsides, and the game expands immeasurably by opening up the field for the offense. Soccer could be a much more exciting and high scoring game with this simple change.

And I agree about heavy fines and suspensions for the flagrant dives and simulations. If I never see Neymar writhing in pain on the ground like a sniper just shot him, I'm fine with that.

NHL - do not let a skills competition (shootout) decide the outcome of the game.

Increase the 3v3 overtime from 5 mins to 10.  If the game is still tied after that - so be it!

True, an idea really worth reconsidering.

And, no rule's change, but demanding consistent use: Zero - I mean zero - toleration of pulling and tearing on jerseys in one-on-one battles. Keep the f...ing mits to yourself! It annoys me no end, sometimes it's punished, sometimes not - where to really draw the line?

nrl - fuzz, the scrum is simply there to draw in players so space for teams to attack from the restart. no one expects a contested scrum any more. but if you just have a tap, teams are already across the field defending.

a player has ten seconds to get off the field when sinbinned. if he does not, it becomes 20 minutes.

soccer - diving. simple. one game first time in career, four the second, 8 every other time. player fined the equivalent of his salary for that period. club fined three times his salary - or some large amount - every time. the clubs will very quickly get sick of paying for that crap and their players will be told.

rugby. pretty much start again. the deliberate knock down gone for starters. stupidest rule in sport. next up, scrums. fuzz, do you preferred the non-contested scrum in league or the joke that is most of rugby. the highlight of this season has been the reds scrum. so good to see a great scrum in action. thanks brad thorn. however, most rugby scrums have to be reset so many times. almost every scrum wastes 90-120 seconds.

fuzz, next time the rugby and league are both on, as soon as a scrum is called in rugby, flick to the league. you will be able to watch a set of 6 tackles before the scrum is decided. sometimes close to two. it is a farce. who wants to watch refs stumbling about trying work this out time and again. i'd much rather watch a set of 6 and some action. any wonder rugby is losing viewers and support?

you do that and you will have defenders all over receivers making it impossible for most catches. but certainly sort them out. some shockers given. not sure there is an easy answer to that.

1 - Football (soccer) - bring in the sin-bin for diving and abusing the officials. Also get rid of substitutions.

2 - Formula 1 - Remove all aero and make the tyres half as wide. Also, naturally aspirated engines only. Let’s see how good those overpaid jockeys really are.

3 - Rugby Union - Get rid of substitutions. Let props and flankers use their loose side arms to support the scrum. First collapse is then an immediate penalty to the opposition.

4 - Chess - Bring back smoking. ?

My solution would be simple: if either the on-pitch ref or the VAR determine that a player has taken a dive, a free kick is automatically awarded to the other side.

Soccer lost me the day I learned of Wayne Rooney's contract worth £300,000 (AUD600,000) a WEEK.  This in a city where one can buy a terraced house for £10K....

The really crazy thing is that broadcasting revenue isn't even the major money earner for clubs.  Merchandising is.  For example, a top team may sell anything up to 2 million jerseys every year -- at 100-odd Euros a jersey, that's an awful lot of cash.  Then there are the other fan articles -- scarves, caps, bedding for the kids, toys, etc -- and the advertising for big sporting goods companies such as Nike or Adidas.

The one thing soccer isn't anymore is a sport...

Maybe take up lawn bowling?  The last club I went to, they were very firmly against drinking on the green, but equally happy for players to smoke while playing.

As for Rugby: introduce free challenges, say two per match.  Let a team's captain force the ref to review a decision or to take note of an infringement, and to consult the TMO.  If the challenge is good, it is not counted towards the total; if it goes against him, he loses a challenge.  This would slow down play, but it might help curb the bad habits of some teams to habitually play offside, take out players off the ball, and rely on unpunished forward passes for their play.

Agree with this 100%. I bet the vast majority of games would end during a 10 minute 3 on 3, and if they didn’t, they’d still be a hell of a lot more exciting than the stupid shootout.

Ok then allow tripping.

I pretty much stopped watching NFL years ago when the games became so full of rules that they just lost their flow, sputtering from penalty to penalty. And pass interference became one of the easiest ways to gain 40 yards. And I had to witness over and over, grown men who are millions of dollars overpaid demand cheer from the audience every time they simply do their job by actually catching the ball. And oh Lord, if they don’t catch the ball and anyone was remotely near them, they act like the ref just shot their dog.

They should start showing the games on the Lifetime network.

Ok, rant over. Carry on. ?
