Whatever I'm smoking, but nothing too weird. If I'm smoking a Sancho Panza, they'll likely get HUPC.

Partagas Shorts and Montecristo No.4. True to the marca, benchmark CC's. Always appreciated by my occasional smoking friends. I have had a few new-to cigar friends ditch them at half way or less, but I don't let this get to me. Once I give someone a cigar, it's theirs to do with as they please. I always choose these two cigars because they are staples in my humidor and not too big or expensive.

Depends on what they are capable of smoking.  Don't want the cigar ashed a quarter way.  Don't want them getting sick...  Usually a robusto sized cigar is most liked by the occasional smoker.  If they can handle any cigar, I usually give them what I am smoking.

Putting out a few boxes on the dining room table and letting them take their pick fun.  Guests get a hoot out of that.

My friends don't get garbage... I've found that an aged RASS rarely disappoints & it doesn't break the bank. Set out a 50 cab with dark wrappers with a pungent smell & watch anyone who even relatively appreciates cigars grin from ear to ear. That being said, I am also the 1st one to shame them if they don't finish it. They have come to realize it comes with the territory. If it is a close friend that really appreciates cigars than we share the same cigar.

Usually what I'm smoking, which lately has been HuHCs or Monte #5s, or a MF. If it's someone I know really appreciates a good cigar, then I pull out a pair of something nice from the humidor (so, it's still what I'm smoking :-p)

I'm another for the Montecristo No.4. Not that I consider it a throw away, but I think they can be a good introduction to Havanas.

Agree 100%.  I tend to give the casual smoker or novice something not too overpowering but flavorful.  Part of me wants to give them something that screams classic cuban tobacco, like a Party Corona Esp and the like.  In the end, if they are guests in my house or someone who wants to experience a Cuban cigar, I try and help them along unless they say "to hell with the presentation (I do tend to drone on:D), just give me a smoke". Then its Quinteros (which is a fine smoke but not too much $).

Padron 2000s to an infrequent smoker, something tailored to a regular smoker, whatever they want to good friends

I only give out my cigars to people that will appreciate them.

I keep a supple of NC’s  for my “lay down” cigars. But I’m a prick.  If I give you a stick and you leave 1/2 in the ashtray, you will never get another from me. Bring your own. And I will tell them to their face.

I tend to give away the cheaper, smaller NC’s to those who really don’t understand the value of a good cigar. Similar to an exceptional spirit, wine, or beer there are many nuances in taste and experience that are lost to the novice.

I haven’t many friends.   Probably the name that does it....  But, the few cigar smoking friends that do visit have pretty much full access to any opened box in the collection.

depends if the are seasoned Cuban smokers then Cubans if the are exc- cig. smokers or

"one puff, show off type after one or two drinks" then it is Dom./Nic trash pile for them.

Tend to give out ones that I know are solid but not floating my boat for whatever reason, if a complete novice I go for the NC or a shorty. If it’s someone who is well versed then you up your game assuming they’re a good friend.

I want the occasional smoker to have a good experience, so I tend to give out 2-5 year old robustos or corona gordas (PSD4 or Punch Punch or Hoyo Epi 1 or Siglo IV).  I'd really like to offer PC's to the newbies but 'size' is such an issue ?that I've given up on that.

At a high school reunion, an old classmate said he wanted a short one, because he didnt want to waste it if he didnt like it. he picked up the vigia...

and according to my cigar etiquette, its not all that polite to not offer the one they chose from your stash.

he took 2 half puffs, and put it down... didnt say anything, and didnt finish it either. at the end of the night the stick had a lightly toasted foot and a soaking wet head... never going to bring a gun to a knife fight again.

It's funny that some of you say you only give NC to the casual smoker. While I prefer Cubans myself, it's because Cubans to me have a consistent flavor throughout the cigar and aren't too much on the pocket. All of the NC in my collection are a lot more expensive than my Cuban cigars, and as far as budget smokes goes, there are a lot cheaper CC budget smokes than NC budget smokes and the CC's won't display complexity so they're easier for the novice to enjoy and pick flavors out of, rather something with lots of changes throughout.

Great topic.  For newbies or acquaintances I usually direct them to Padron 3000 or something smaller in that line because it's cheaper and not overpowering and I personally enjoy them a lot.  For my Cuban cigar smoking buddies and family anything in the humidor is fair game as long as I have more than 1 of them (e.g. aged Cohibas).  Now that I have my head wrapped around the Cuban Cigar portfolio in the future I'll add Monte #4 & #5's to the list for newbies since they're smaller, inexpensive, and widely liked and the level of offense for any tossed cigars would be minimal to none.

Really anything in my humidor is fair game, unless I have one or two. Sharing and turning folks on to good cigars is fun for me. If I’m going to a party or something that is predominantly people I don’t know, I’ll bring 4-5 HU Majestics or Ry J coronitas in cedro (which I actually love) to pass around. Something cheap and cheerful. If it’s a good friend’s party, I’ll bring a bunch of something I feel like is smoking well.

good bump.  I think the gift of a cigar needs to be tailored to the situation at hand.  Part of the fun of going to a B&M as a novice is having somebody with experience and knowledge help you pick something that fits your taste.  This is something a seasoned smoker can offer to a guest who shows an interest in cigars.  Discussing taste preferences and describing how certain cigars might be appealing is a good way to get people excited about the smoking experience, which, in turn, seems to minimize (or at least marginally reduce) the chances of seeing the gifted cigar tossed after a couple puffs.  Of course, a non-smoker trying a cigar for the first time is always likely to toss that cigar without finishing it, but in a lot of cases, attempting to strike up a discussion about different cigars and their properties will give a clue as to who is serious about testing the waters and who just wants to hold a cigar and play Arnold.  If they seem like the former, go through the stash and help them pick something they will enjoy, possibly guiding them toward something small for their first go-round.  If the latter, grab them a Mark Twain and call it a day.  For regular smokers who forgot to bring something, offer them something of the caliber they normally smoke, let them pick something, or offer them what you're having.  These people can always get you back next time ?‍♂️

For the label conscious who want a cc, Monte 4 or Party short. For someone who wants to try some real flavor, a Boli PC.

For those that are more likely not to smoke more than a half inch, I have plenty of NC in a humidor for them to choose from. Like an old Chicago cop, you have your throw down gun and then the gun you use. Usually a red dot Cohiba or an Avo. Good cigars, but I have a ton of them I will never smoke now.
