The “what’s your aging strategy“ thread got me thinking about this.

I have lots of 1966’s, I smoke about one per year.

Curious how all you think they are coming along.

First couple of years tasted the glorious citrus, that went away for a while, briefly tasted it last year

Anyway, thoughts? My 1966 due date is arriving

This is my favorite cigar, alas, it has priced itself well out of my reach. I unfortunately had no aging strategy and ravenously gobbled up all I could get my hands on. I wish you delight with your stockpile!

My thoughts are that they are aging out. With your “lots” stock you should send a box my way so as to not waste any before they taste like newspaper. ?

I think your username and the phrase "I have lots of 1966’s" are at odds with one another.

Maybe why he has that username????? :D

they may be entering a slumber period. happens quite often during aging cigars. but yes, even if they come back to form, they may not register the same flavors anyway. but then again they're may be even better flavors LOL

last one i had was last year, it was great! if anyone has any of the Punch Serie D'oro No.1 UK '08 RE or the RA Allones Extra...start looking at them! they are glorious!

My succinct suggestion would be to smoke them while they are at their peak. It's possible to age something to death. Rob talks about and I've linked it within here in the section on Aging:

The Noob Thread I Never Read... Buying Cuban Cigars

Far from it. Not the 66, certainly not. If you find a subperforming one it's either due to variability (edit: yours or the cigar's), or one should overthink ones storage conditions.

Side note - I am also not one for the (one-) "peak" concept. Cigars will become different. Transformers. They change over time, but where and when someone finds his "peak" is personal to some extent.

What I meant by 'due date arriving' was time to smoke one.

Going to tonight :D

the RA Allones Extra

The last one of these I had a few months ago was to me about the same as a 17 RAS. Not sure if this is a testament to the RAAE or recent production RAS, but I'm leaning towards the RAS.

Never had a recent RASS but the RAAE certainly shares the RA DNA. i just find that now its like the flavors are on steroids. very rich for me, much more than any regular production RA. but like anything, it varies from cigar to cigar, but overall that's what i'm seeing from the recent ones i had.

Technically, in some private forums and public, a box of 1966's can be had for less (or equal to) than what the Talismans are going for.   As for the 1966's longevity. I haven't smoked one since about a year ago.  I found it to be somewhat less powerful, but still very dynamic in flavour range. I'll have to smoke another soon when this weather stabilizes.

The only 1966 that matters.

There's also these significant cultural milestones (at least for me)...

Absolutely, John!

That famous cover by Klaus Voormann - as coincidence would have it, just yesterday turning 80.

I was actually referring to RA Superiores (RAS).

I actually find the RASS to be the most un-RA RA. Not a big fan. I don't "get" them, never have, and find them bland and boring and have for 15 years. But they are popular and to each their own.

The RAS and RAG are much more "true" to the RA DNA, although I'd say that there's a lot of variation in the RA marca. The RASCC is much more of a firecracker than any other RA and probably 90% of all CCs. Very strong toasted tobacco and herbal flavors with very little, if any, of the "stonefruit" that's very present in cigars like the RAS, RAG, RACA and RAAE--at least in RASCCs less than 5 years old. I've never had the pleasure of smoking a well-aged RASCC as I can't keep from smoking them when I have them!

Plus they still give you enjoyment. Not like the England football team, which is frankly depressing.
