Ken Gargett Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 and while we are at it, where do brown bears rank? i've always been a dog person and not a cat person. we know have empirical evidence. https://cosmosmagazine.com/biology/it-s-official-dogs-are-smarter-than-cats 2
Fuzz Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 I've got a Labrador Retriever (it's actually my brother's dog, but he left him with us when he moved overseas, so now he's mine... and he can't have him back! ) who the breeder said was "a bit dopey". I've come to find, he's not dopey, he's bloody cunning! Cheeky little bugger knows exactly how to push our buttons to give him a snack. If he wants to go somewhere on his daily walk, that you don't want to go, he will instantly become an immovable lump until you give in. And I'm pretty sure he also knows how to tell time. He knows exactly when his breakfast and dinner time is, and even takes into account daylight saving. 1

canadianbeaver Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 I voted cats but hate them. So does Blue. 2

Islandboy Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 There’s no clear winner. We have 8 cats. The intelligence level of our pride ranges from quite clever to downright daft. I’m living with a microcosm of society. 1
Stump89 Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 I think cats are smarter just because they seem to have that evil genius quality. Or maybe my 2 cats are a-holes on purpose. Browns bears might get too much credit due to sheer size and brute strength. 1
Guest Nekhyludov Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 The important question isn't which is smarter, it's which would you rather live with? An affectionate and obedient pet that's house trained, or an indifferent pet who shits in a box in your kitchen and sometime deigns to wander by and stick its butthole in your face? And unless you're a drug kingpin, the bear is out of the question.
cigcars Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 We've owned both dogs and cats for forever. And through those years we've had stupid dogs and smart cats. I did see a televised study-demo that dogs are higher up in the pecking order than cats. Doesn't mean that out in the wild the cougar will say, "Yessir! Yessir!" to your Schnauzer! Humans are the highest in the pecking order of everything, but doesn't mean a "lowly" animal won't eat us if circumstances permit! But the televised demo showed a caged environment with a semi-domesticated lion and a regular house dog (German Shepherd) in the cage. They set one bowl of food in the cage. The German Shepherd tore into the food and started eating to his heart's content: the lion - fully grown male, mane and everything - went to a corner of the cage to wait...until the dog had finished. Then the lion proceeded over to eat what was left. I did see that same thing in our home. Our dog(s) were "King of the May", and the cats just obediently either stayed out of their way, or only came to us for affection upon the dog being occupied with something else!

CrankYanker Posted December 11, 2017 Posted December 11, 2017 Brown Beas for sure....they live in the wild and have to learn how to adapt. They have the ability to scare human beings out of their food as well.
Popular Post Dmpotocek Posted December 12, 2017 Popular Post Posted December 12, 2017 I’ve had this conversation quite a bit but in the dog vs dog context. It ultimately boils down to what your definition of “intelligence” is. My wife and I have 3 dogs, 2 standard poodles (higher end of canine intelligence spectrum) and 1 English bulldog (right at the bottom of the intelligence spectrum). My definition of intelligence for a dog is simple: do you listen to me, do you make my life easier (or harder) and how much can I trust you. Bulldog: walks off leash, knows basic commands, when I leave the house I know he’s not going to destroy anything (or move) and if I leave him in the yard he will stay in the yard. The poodles are pretty much the opposite. If they don’t have enough stimulation, they’ll make their own. Kind of like a toddler with too much sugar. I love them all, but case and point:It took about 50 tries to get this picture. In 49 of them bulldog looks exactly the same. The same can’t be said about the other two. I don’t get a lot of say in our Xmas card design. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2 4
Ken Gargett Posted December 12, 2017 Author Posted December 12, 2017 we actually had a dog which could spell. i am not making that up. it knew where in the house it could go and where it could not. mention 'bath' or 'vet' and it took off anywhere. so one day, we actually spelt 'B A T H'. the dog bolted. it has never heard the word spelt before. very twilight zone. 1

BTWheezy Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 This is Buddy, the Nutless Wonder...he’s recently been “altered”. Dumber than a sack of hammers. Although we’ve never owned a dog, I’ll concede the point based on current evidence. 1 3

BTWheezy Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 Hey Ken, fair point. Original comment is edited, but the original lives on in your reply. If a concern, you might want to delete your reply to scrub the offending word. Sorry!
ElPuro Posted December 12, 2017 Posted December 12, 2017 I think it's pretty common knowledge dogs are generally smarter. Me? I really want to own a monkey (or some version thereof).
