El Presidente Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Take a look at the attached poll for me. From the list, select the flavours in a cigar that you encounter on a regular basis . I received an email this morning from an alarmed member who feels left out because he can only taste toasted tobacco in a cigar. I have gone through some recommendations on palate training with him but I wanted to be able to refer to this thread as to other members experiences. Let us know how you went out of 14
CrankYanker Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I'm in the middle of cream and leather. I pick up more cream notes than anything. At this time my stock is getting acquainted with my humidor so more notes should be picked up within 6 months with some new stock.
shlomo Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Only lets us pick one? I can usually pick up on more than one of these depending on what cigar I am smoking along with a dozen other factors.

HarveyBoulevard Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 What...no fish?! Ken will be irritated... Mmmmmm...trout....mmmmmm.

anjimj Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Toasted tobacco, wood, and cocoa for me. On occasion I will get a blast on any one of those other categories listed above. Depending on the cigar.
zeedubbya Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I believe I can get most of them except some overlap (confusion) with woodiness and nuts, earth and mushroom, Floral and Leather (don't ask me why on this one, confuses me even). I am surprised coffee isn't in the list. 2
Wilzc Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I've never had the pleasure of tasting wood or leather ever but when I smoke cigars these are the common notes popping up Also Nuts. Grass. And damp earth. Mmmm. I love munching on grass and damp earth Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
madandana Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I think I need palate training. Very seldom have I ever tasted anything other then leather or nuts. 1
JR Kipling Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Hopefully the palate training tips will be mentioned. Would definitely be interested in that. 2
backbone Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Reading Robs description of cigars on 24/24 helps me pickup on some of the notes in a cigar. Cocoa is a tough one for me. I taste the note, it just isn't what I would call "cocoa". Most of the "taste" comes through a slight retro hale for me. 2

garbandz Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I neglected to check fruit. Plums or cherries happen sometimes. Rob loves the cherry notes in a RyJ, I don't pick it up often, but I like it a lot. I find this more often in NCs.
Colt45 Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 My votes are for flavors I typically encounter on a regular basis, and does not include other flavors I am able to discern but might encounter less frequently.
CrankYanker Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 There was only one time I did get fruit and it was from a DRVA that I recently smoked. I got a touch of a sweet fruit taste at the start then it went away due to it needing some more aging. I would like to see some tricks to train/test the palete

I pre-empt my brains but still I don't pick the notes up. I have encountered creamy milk chocolate in Petit Edmundos Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Philc2001 Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I don't see the option for pungent farm essence (aka: manure). I know it's strange, but there is a certain aroma or essence when I smoke certain CCs that gives out this pungent aroma that I find uniquely Cuban and uniquely appealing. It is what I refer to as the Cuban twang. Hard to describe, but I like it. 3
Islandboy Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 To me, the underlying essence that makes a cuban cigar unique is sandalwood - they all seem to have some degree of this aromatic spiciness. I find I don’t taste a cigar from the smoke I bring into my mouth nearly as much as I get from the immediate aroma coming off the burning foot. I tend to constantly pass the cigar under my nose while smoking it to take in all the elements. That’s generally where I find the most cinnamon, graham cracker, brown sugar, etc. (the good stuff). 3
HeadInTheClouds Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Leather and Wood are the most predominant flavors upfront. I feel every stick has that toasted tobacco taste. I have to go looking on the retrohale/Aftertaste to find the cream/cocoa/nutty/citrus tastes.
joeypots Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Sometimes I can detect a note of grass in a young Cuban cigar.
RickHendeson Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 Lol -- haters gonna hate, but I have to say I marked every one of these and have discerned every one of these countless times. BTW IMHO if you're not gonna retrohale, you might as well give up cigars, or at least Cubans. You're wasting your $.

Hmmm but on that basis you're necessarily defining your palate so much as defining the spread that most cigars have to offer. I dunno. Maybe that was the point of the exercise.
