rxavier1979 Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 So I have a buddy that is splitting most of my box purchases with me but I've never really done that even with NCs. So my question is, who keeps the box? Who keeps the 25th stick? Is it one or the other? 25th stick, or the box? Do you split the price in half or divide by 25 and base price off cost per stick received or is the 25th cigar a bonus for the person facilitating the split??? LOL, I know this sounds dumb but I just wanted to find out how you all typically handled this to give me a better idea of how to handle this. 2
fabes Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 You should defer to the wisdom of Solomon in this case and cut the 25th cigar in half as well as the box. But really, the split initiator usually calls the shots. 4
Popular Post Jeremy Festa Posted November 2, 2016 Popular Post Posted November 2, 2016 Give them the box and the 25th cigar. It is what I would do, and therefore what you should do too. 5
Philc2001 Posted November 2, 2016 Posted November 2, 2016 Agreed with Fabes. I would just recommend you state the terms in advance so there is no confusion. On my box splits I calculate the cost per cigar and then add actual shipping cost for the package. IMPO the box doesn't really have any value, but usually it adds to the shipping cost, so factor that in if the other half wants the box. 2
PapaDisco Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 The hot chick gets to keep the box. And anything else she wants for that matter. Sheesh don't you guys know anything?? 2
PigFish Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 When I used to do this, the mailer (receiver) of the original order keeps the odd stick sends the box and pays the mail. Then when you split again, the other party does the receiving then he/she gets the odd stick, ships the box and pays the mail. I had a partner from the other end of the country that I used to do this with a lot in the early 2Ks. The system was great and we split some great cigars that we might not have tried if we did not have the arrangement. Not that there is a right or wrong way, it is just what I used to do. I would suggest that you guys work out a scenario of 'what if' the cigars get lost as well. One party should not get stuck and the loss should be divided between the two parties. Always better to discuss it up-front. 2 cents, Piggy 3
jp1979 Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 I usually split boxes by 5s so problem solved there. Also whoever pays for the majority of sticks gets box.. 1
Smoke6 Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 I always looked at it from the perspective of who is doing the most work? Not to mention the CC tallies. Also, who's address is being used? I guess we don't have to worry about that much in the future, but for now as far as I know you still run risk of confiscation and your name being on the bad boy list 1
Lant63 Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 There is a member on this forum who I recently split a box of Ra 225 with. I asked for the box and he kept the 25th cigar. Usually that's how it works in my experience. Just ask the other party. If you are splitting the cost right down the middle the one person should get the box and one gets the extra cigar. Three people involved rotate on every box:8 cigars: box9 cigars: no box 8 cigars: shaft Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 4
canadianbeaver Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 Are you doing this more than once? You keep the box and extra this time, He will next time. If you keep the extra, send your friend a cigar of similar for participating in box from your stash of empty ones for safe travel. Brother, these are wonderful cigars. Enjoy! CB 1
rxavier1979 Posted November 3, 2016 Author Posted November 3, 2016 Thank you all! Makes perfect sense. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything major. Since I'm new to this hobby, I'd like to collect the boxes for display around my cabinet. But I was just planning on splitting the cost into a per cigar price. Either way, I think my buddy is ok with it since he's been into cigars for like 15-20 years. Although I plan on giving him the cabs as I don't have room for those sizes anyways. 1
Popular Post LordAnubis Posted November 3, 2016 Popular Post Posted November 3, 2016 I consider the box at the discretion of the person hosting the split. If you're doing the hard work organizing to buy the box then you call the shots on what happens with the box. As for the 25th cigar. Calculate price per cigar and the person getting buying 13 pays for 13 and the person getting 12 pays for 12. 6
garbandz Posted November 3, 2016 Posted November 3, 2016 soon you will have too many boxes. I would keep the cabs for storage, send the paper boxes on. .when you have enough, send the cabs on. 3

There is still blank wall space in the drawing room. 1
Pharmacovigilant Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 Fun question, and interesting to see the responses. In my latest box splits, if I execute the purchase, we split the price and I either keep the box or the 25th cigar, but not both. And when I keep the 25th cigar, I treat my bro to a 13th cigar from deep in the recesses of my collection, as a snuck-in surprise. Sort of like the secret toy in a box of Cracker Jacks. Do they still make Cracker Jacks? And if so, is the secret toy still inside?

RWhiz Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 The few times I've split, I made the purchase kept the odd cigar and passed on the box. Similar to Pig Fish in how we've split box orders. It's been awhile, anyone down for a split?
topdiesel Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 For a close local buddy...If he is splitting most of your boxes with you give every other box to him. If you already have a half empty/full box for a size, then give him the next box of that size even if it is not his turn for the box. Ask him if he even wants the boxes. If he just has a desktop he might not want them. For online splits...If it is one box and I fronted the cash, then I keep the box in most cases. If It is multiple boxes of the same cigar, I will send the extra box if someone wants it. If it is a 50 cab, you can pry it from my cold dead hands. If I was splitting a 25 box, then I would break out the price per cigar for the actual number of cigars he was buying. But I would charge him 100% of the prez's shipping charge. I find it best to discuss the terms with the person you are splitting with. That way no one is disappointing. You can always throw in a surprise if you want to be generous. In your case, since he has been doing this 15-20 years, then I would ask if he has any cool older boxes that he doesn't want any more. Those will look much cooler than new ones if you are displaying them. 2
