Yeah, saw this.  Totally nuts....  That's one lucky fellow if for no other reason than he didn't get smashed to death.  Doubt the GWS was thinking a meal after he found himself hemmed in....

As an adult NO effing WAY.  As a UTE I used to water ski and shark fish in the same spot on the Manatee River.  Had no worries as a youngster.

Like to think I'm smarter in the "Observes self preservation theory" category....

Saw that, way crazy, that diver was more calm than I would be and I like sharks....but not in my cage

I believe that's called shock! I bet his wet suit was a stinky mess when he took it off!

Wow. One of the many reasons why baiting sharks for dives is unsafe and illegal in the states.

Im going FREE diving off Oahu later this winter, slim to no chance of great whites there, but galapago, sand and tiger sharks all day. Its done safely everyday.

Ken nailed it. Thats a Huge lawsuit waiting to happen, bad practices.

I have no experience in this, so please excuse my ignorance. How did the shark get into the cage?

well, it is not supposed to. presumably lured there for the entertainment of the divers and proved to be a bit stronger than they expected and everything went pear shaped and it ended up there. cage crashed.

Holy Sh*t! Above and beyond "Can I get my money back?" And, "Will someone please put my intestines back into my body?"

Simply unfathomable to me.

Thanks, Ken!

Correct, definately not supposed to. There are viewing "windows" built into the cages. Areas 18" to 24" tall and about as wide as the cage that allow a better view for videos and photos. My guess is the shark got its nose in there and either popped some welds or bent the bars themselves due to the speed it hit the cage at. Most newer cages have 1" or thick plexi covering the open area. It appears this one did not.

I saw a documentary once and one of the things that was mentioned was how flimsy the cages were built. It's not like a company makes them but frequently just some guy with a welding torch. Not sure how true but enough to give me pause even though I am an experienced diver.

That video had to be an excursion offered by the best bar ever!

After a bit of research the diver was an instructor with 1000's of dives logged and used to keeping his cool under stress in the water (ever dealt with new divers before, not fun, I refuse to dive with newly certified as they panic easily).  Best is, he kept a hold of the camera the whole time. I want to see that footage.

And from what's being said the shark bent the bars after hitting with such force.  Basically pinned the guy to the bottom of the cage.

Looking at that, I get the same feeling I get when I've taken my seat on a plane and I'm looking up the aisle to see who's going to sit beside me.

What? Hoping it's not a great white? That's some irrational fear!
