I have zero experience with limited editions but I'm looking for two boxes /10 in the robusto or close to the robusto size format to lay down for a few years and smoke on special occasions. These will not be for "investments" and I know taste is subjective but really just looking for some recommendations on what was known as a good quality release that's still available. Currently looking at the Coro limited edition and the grand epicure. Both of which I love their regular production robusto.

Thanks gents

In general, and considering the LE program as a whole, there's a bit of agreement that most take at least 2-4 years to begin to really show some promise, and that many of them seem to begin to decline at around 8-10 years. Based on my personal experience and many others' I've seen and read, there seems to be a relatively short window in which many LEs are at their peak. There are some exceptions--the RyJ Hermosos #1 and #2 from 03 and 04 have always been good and some recent tastings I'm aware of were positive. The 04 Cohiba Sublimes are another I've heard pretty positive things about across the board from day one.

Important to remember, though, is that the LEs that appear to be declining now are cigars produced between 2001-2006 which was certainly a period of much difficulty for many cigars in general. Many LEs produced after 2006, however, seem to be a bit different. I've heard some positive things about fairly recent tastings of the 06 Cohiba Piramides and the 07 Trini Ingenios appear to be hitting their stride right now. The 07 Hoyo Regalos has always been one of my favorite LEs and has been solid since it's release IMO. Just try and find thinner, lighter wrappers on them.

That being said, my personal recommendations for recent LE robustos that are still out there would be the 2012 Upmann Robustos or the 13 Hoyo Grand Epicure. The Cohiba Robustos Supremos is certainly good, and so is the HU Mag 56. Harder to find are 2010 Party Serie D Especial, but those are smoking very well right now also. Whatever you choose, be aware that there's little data on how the LEs wiill hold up past 12 years. Expect the LEs to peak around 7-10 years old until proven otherwise.

Although a little smaller gauge (47) than a robusto, the RA Club Allones is a terrific cigar, is readily available and should have several years of evolution/useful life remaining.

If you're looking at the coro le you should consider the Mag 56. Tons of room for them age/develop (although pretty tasty right now) .  Second pick would be RA clubs.

Same here. Older Limited Editions may not be as easy to find.

Plenty of members with a more educated pallet than I but from my experience the Monte 520 EL12's, and Trinidad Ingenious EL07's are smoking awesome, and I'd get another box of the Mag 56's if they come up on 24:24 again.

I have a box of Monte 520's that are still napping. Might have to break into them in the next month or two.

The Monte 520 is certainly one of the most interesting LEs ever released. It seems to be coming along very, very slowly in most cases. There were some that were very good early on, but I hear more good things as time goes by. But I still don't think many are ready yet. This may be an example of an LE with real legs for the long-term.

And regarding the Trini Ingenios, yes, the opinions on these lately have been stellar. They are right in the sweet spot and we'll see if they get even better at 10 years+. This was most definitely a cigar that received negative reviews across the board during it's first 7 years. As a result, these are still available from many vendors at a reasonable price. My advice is to buy them if you find them.

Hey Mattb2 The Grand Epicures are amazing and so much smoke comes out highly recommend that

Your other choice the Cohiba Supremo is also fantastic but not every box some boxes I found to be some of the best smokes ever and other boxes not nearly as good

The Mag 56 excellent as well and consistently excellent

So if you could buy three boxes those are the three and hope for the best on the Supremos and if lucky they are a treat

What, someone mention the high quality of McDonald's food? I think they are now adding a second wrapper to the McRib...

Oh, no, just another topic about ELs. Hmmm, kinda' the same thing I guess!

Sorry, carry on! -the Pig

I'd work on getting a nice box of CORO instead. Few Els or REs have given me the satisfaction of a well kept, well rested Cohiba.  But that's just me.
