JohnS Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Recently there was a 24:24 sale which listed H.Upmann Magnum 46s as seconds as some had some nicks in the feet. They were graded by El Pres as High-end PE. I have no doubt that if you've picked up a box, that they will turn out to be highly enjoyable. As can seen, the wrapper is claro. A little over a month ago, I had the honour to enjoy a supreme 10 year-old H.Upmann Petit Corona that was refined, over-flowing in shortbread and toasted tobacco goodness and for me, was the epitome of what I enjoy in a quality H.Upmann. The wrapper on the Petit Corona was colorado claro. At Havanathon last year, I enjoyed an H.Upmann Connossieur A and an H.Upmann No.2 which also had colorado claro wrappers, maybe a tad darker, approaching colorado. I have very distinctive preferences when it comes to wrapper shades for some marcas, but when it comes to H.Upmann, I don't think I'm swayed by the wrapper shade. H.Upmann is the most popular marca amongst members on our forum, according to recent threads below, it's the marca that cigar enthusiasts, I find, gravitate to. http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=122158 http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=121664 http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=121905 How do you feel? I'm interested in hearing your thoughts...
skalls Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Generally prefer darker shades on all my CCs. Colorado Maduro to Maduro is generally where i get the best flavors. The exception tot his is RYJ where I want that red shade wrapper for the cherry notes. For H Upman, dark and oily. If they are on the claro end I really want them to be oily to give some extra flavors to it. I get much more breadiness with the darker wrappers. The Mag 46 and #2 in my images are exactly what shade for those vitolas. The Mag 50 box I have is somewhere between these 2 2
DoubleDD Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 No 2 and PC has to be darker for me, colorado maduro. The Sir Winston I prefer in the colorado range. The rest of the line fails to do anything for me. 1
WhiteMamba Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 There were some pc's up a week or two ago on 24:24 that were the darkest I've ever seen (not that I have seen that many) I've only had the claro or Colorado Claro. It would be interesting to have some of the same cigar in different shades to see if it really makes that much difference 1
earthson Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 I like seeing rosado in a fresh box of HUPC and HUCM. It fades some with age, but the rosado seems to deliver the leather that ages to cream. 2
Habana Mike Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Some of the best I've had were with thin Colorado Claro or Claro wrappers. Had some great PC and CM with Colorado Maduro too. 1
El Presidente Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Colorado Claro, Colorado, Rosado, Colorado Maduro, Oscuro.....just give me sheen (oil) and thin wrappers. Now with a choice of the above with sheen and thin wrappers, for Upmann, I would generally pick Colorado or Colorado Maduro for myself. 1
westg Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 thin dark oily ,,sheen ..jobs on...its what I like in a cigar wrapper.. 2
mk05 Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Color makes no difference. Harvest is the only thing that matters. 1
westg Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Color makes no difference. Harvest is the only thing that matters. how so ?....I think colour makes a big difference ..especially with the bushido Good harvest ,bad conditions ,bad cigar ??
Duane Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 I like the brown ones. Im with Shlo as long as it has oil and an good draw im an happy fella 1
Hunter1974 Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Not sure about all the fancy color names but the ones I seem to enjoy most have a red tint to them 2
dflan82 Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Colorado Claro, Colorado, Rosado, Colorado Maduro, Oscuro.....just give me sheen (oil) and thin wrappers. Now with a choice of the above with sheen and thin wrappers, for Upmann, I would generally pick Colorado or Colorado Maduro for myself. This ^^^ I enjoy Upmann in all shapes, sizes, and colors but the most memorable ones have been that Colorado to Colorado Maduro range. Between this topic and the other linked topics, it made me realize that I do not have enough Upmann No.2's. Guess I will be loading up next time Rob posts them. (Thanks John ) 3
JohnS Posted March 5, 2016 Author Posted March 5, 2016 I like the brown ones. It would be interesting to have some of the same cigar in different shades to see if it really makes that much difference Yes, I saw those those on that 24:24 and thought the same thing! I like seeing rosado in a fresh box of HUPC and HUCM. It fades some with age, but the rosado seems to deliver the leather that ages to cream. Ages to cream? Now that's what I like above all! Some of the best I've had were with thin Colorado Claro or Claro wrappers. Had some great PC and CM with Colorado Maduro too. Excellent! Colorado Claro, Colorado, Rosado, Colorado Maduro, Oscuro.....just give me sheen (oil) and thin wrappers. Now with a choice of the above with sheen and thin wrappers, for Upmann, I would generally pick Colorado or Colorado Maduro for myself. I can testify to how satisfied you've been with a thin-wrappered corona gorda H.Upmann Magnum 46. That look on your face...priceless! (Thanks John ) It's my sincere pleasure to remind you Dan. Thanks! I love a good Upmann No.2. 1
shlomo Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 funny looking band on that pc.............. Its one of the original upmann bands. Been gone for a decade or so.
Easttide Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Both the 2011 Connie 1's and 2014 Mag 46's are fairly light, exactly the color of graham crackers, and they are magnificent!
joeypots Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 I've had light colored Upman #2s that made me nicotine sick. I've been smoking a fair # of Conni 1s and have been pleased with them even though they aren't too dark. I have two fivers of the Conni A that are opposite ends of the color spectrum, I should do a side by side even though the light ones are older. That said, I don't go by wrapper color to often. I think I've been smoking Cuban cigars for 15 years and I've learned that smoking is the test, not so much appearance. Oil, though, as many have said, is quite important. Give me a greasy box any day.
earthson Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 Not sure about all the fancy color names but the ones I seem to enjoy most have a red tint to them Yes I Ages to cream? Now that's what I like above all! Right there with ya! After 10 years+ of smoking cigars, a good dairy-cream finish is what I crave! I've actually been all OVER Partagas Presidentes for that very reason. When they've got that cream element, they are some of the best cigars I've had if memory serves. Fun shape, too! So classic, so elegant and so satisfying! 1

So classic, so elegant and so satisfying! Agree about the cream! Cubans are the only cigars I have ever gotten that from!
foursite12 Posted March 5, 2016 Posted March 5, 2016 I'm not the world's Number One Mag 50 fan but when they look like this they are at their best. 1
wabashcr Posted March 6, 2016 Posted March 6, 2016 I've had pretty good luck with lighter wrappers when it comes to Upmann. I'd probably shoot for Colorado claro when it comes to Connie 1s, No 2s, PCs, HUHC, etc. Mag 46 or Mag 50 I'd probably aim for a little darker wrappers. I agree with others who have said wrapper color is less important than having thin, soft, oily wrappers.
