El Presidente Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 looking through some D4's today and most were very good. The extremes between very good (HQ) and fail isn't quite translated in the picture. Imagine a Candela green for the bottom box. Same mastercase.
dangolf18 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I'd take the candela over the top box anyday.
FLB03TT Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 A graphic example for not buying blind. This variation within the same matercase is truly disturbing.
El Presidente Posted November 12, 2015 Author Posted November 12, 2015 Please. If someone would like a Candela (with a nice hint of grey)....contact me! 2
kuma Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Why the ugly color. Were they rolled like that (color of leaf) on purpose or did they change over time?
bergaler Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 mmmm D4s Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
CaptainQuintero Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Why the ugly color. Were they rolled like that (color of leaf) on purpose or did they change over time? As far as I know, poorly fermented. I don't think it's on purpose! 2
skalls Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Are the ugly wrappers oily or are they lifeless? I'd rather have the top box but the bottom ones look like there's a sheen to them. I suppose that's a nice way of telling someone they finished in dead last place in a race.
JohnS Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 As far as I know, poorly fermented. I don't think it's on purpose! Spot on. My preference is the darker colorado D4's and to sample after a minimum period of resting. Candela D4's...nunca! 1
Smallclub Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Why the ugly color. Were they rolled like that (color of leaf) on purpose or did they change over time? Change over time? A rolled wrapper doesn't change from color X to green/candela inside the box... A green wrapper is a leaf that has not matured long enough under the required conditions; it doesn't "turn" green… 1
SCgarman Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 D4's are clearly over-produced. Quality seems to really be hit or miss with these. I have purchased dozens of boxes of RASS over the years and must say they have been pretty consistent. Consistently good, IMO
Popular Post El Presidente Posted November 12, 2015 Author Popular Post Posted November 12, 2015 Enough to say not one e-mail for the green D4. Case closed 6
Magpie Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Quality control at Habanos must be non existent. Can only be that demand for D4 is higher than a production level at which they can maintain consistent quality. I love CC, but they are way off the leading NC brands in terms of consistency in quality and construction.
Andy04 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Candela shade is produced when the leaf is cured too fast.
shlomo Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Enough to say not one e-mail for the green D4. Case closed I'll take them if your willing to sell in the $100 range. I don't mind being the guinea pig. They do look awful though.... 1
TomF Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Well at least they got all the candelas in one box...
Habana Mike Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 That's kind of how they're supposed to do it (wrapper matching) so I guess they got that right..... 3
planetary Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 But wouldn't it be better if they grouped cigars not by color, but instead by roller? And maybe provided a roller code on the box... 1
OZCUBAN Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 The bottom ones I believe are for the new US market same colour as the money ?? 1

Can only be that demand for D4 is higher than a production level at which they can maintain consistent quality. I love CC, but they are way off the leading NC brands in terms of consistency in quality and construction. I've noticed this too. When I primarily bought NC's you could very seldom see any difference in color, construction, etc. You might find some with a tighter roll on occasion, but to the naked eye, you could take random cigars from every box with virtually no difference. It's kinda the same way McDonald's ensures all of its beef and potatoes have the exact same appearcne, tadte, etc. CC's seem to have a far greater range in appearance than any NS's I ever bought. Is it a matter of NC factories having higher quality control and "Cuba being Cuba"? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk
JohnS Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Although we all mainly concur that candela wrappers are not as desirable in cigars, I recall reading that candela cigars were highly popular in the US market in the mid-20th century.

Time, a place and with the right blend....and with a wrapper that was actually mean't to be Candela. Not the crap of the pile. 1
